Chapter 24 - TWENTY MINUTES

Vivienne stood when Sophie entered.

Dr. Cole said:

“Please sit.”

She sat.

Good.

I stayed in the room because Sophie requested.

Her inhaler bag was clipped across her chest.

Vivienne looked at it.

Then away.

Sophie noticed.

“This mine.”

“Yes,” Vivienne said.

“You can’t take.”

“No.”

“Even chores.”

“No.”

“Even if I’m bad.”

“No.”

Good.

Then silence.

Vivienne did not fill.

Sophie asked:

“Why did you hide letters?”

“Because I knew your dad would stop me if he knew what I was doing.”

No euphemism.

“Why did you want him not know?”

“Because I thought I was right.”

“You weren’t.”

“No.”

“Why maid clothes?”

“I wanted to embarrass you and make you feel less powerful.”

My chest tightened.

Specific.

Sophie frowned.

“I wasn’t powerful.”

“I know now.”

“You were adult.”

“Yes.”

“Then you had power.”

Vivienne cried.

“Yes.”

That was the lesson.

Then:

“Why say no room?”

“Because I was scared your dad would always love you in a way that left no place for me or Nicholas.”

Sophie looked at me.

I did not answer.

Then back to Vivienne.

“There was room.”

“Yes.”

“Lots.”

“Yes.”

Seven bedrooms.

Children.

Then:

“Do you like Nicholas?”

Vivienne smiled through tears.

“I love him.”

“Does he know what you did?”

“No. He’s too little.”

“Will you tell?”

“When he is old enough, in a way that doesn’t make him responsible.”

Good.

Then Sophie asked:

“Do you still hate me?”

Vivienne’s face broke.

“I never understood that I hated you until I saw what I had done. I don’t hate you now.”

Not perfect phrasing.

Honest.

Sophie looked at Dr. Cole.

“Can I go?”

“Yes.”

Nineteen minutes.

She left with me.

No hug.

No forgiveness.

In car:

“How feel?”

“Weird.”

“Want again?”

“Not now.”

Okay.

Vivienne sent no follow-up.

Good.

Then Nicholas came over next day.

Sophie looked at him.

“Your mom cried.”

Nicholas, two and a half, said:

“Mommy cry.”

Then drove toy truck into wall.

Enough.

Then Margaret learned meeting occurred.

She did not ask details.

Good.

Then my mother? Margaret is mother. Fine.

Then family system stabilized.

One remaining legal piece:

Vivienne petitioned to seal certain child-abuse records from public access to protect Sophie and Nicholas.

Would I support?

Yes, if focused on child privacy and did not erase conviction.

Court partially sealed sensitive child exhibits while conviction remained public.

Good.

No secrecy for offender reputation, privacy for children.

Then the photos I had leaked years earlier disappeared from many family accounts after I requested removal.

Some screenshots remained.

Internet.

Cannot erase.

Sophie never saw.

Good.

Then my anger-management record.

Diversion done.

I continued therapy voluntarily.

Because one course does not fix instinct.

Good.

Then Margaret’s archival role review.

She chose to keep nonvoting.

Did not seek more.

Done.

Then Sophie’s trust hit a milestone? Not needed.

May you like

No more money.

Main conflict late climax should be CH25-26 maybe final family dinner involving all, letters returned, mother/stepmother boundaries. Let's create CH25 maybe Nicholas birthday where Sophie chooses to attend with Vivienne present, but structured. CH26 final home scene with cabinet repurposed and all legal closures. Good.
