Nora eventually volunteered at a domestic-violence support organization.
Not immediately.
Years later.
After enough distance.
She did not become a celebrity survivor.
No speaking tour.
One evening a month.
Practical intake help.
Transportation forms.
Housing referrals.
Sometimes a woman said:
“I know he’s bad, but my kid exaggerates.”
Nora never answered:
Believe everything blindly.
She said:
“Separate the question. Your child can be wrong about one thing and still deserve safety when they say they’re scared.”
That came from Darby.
Another woman:
“If I call police, he’ll say I’m unstable.”
Nora:
“Make a safety plan with professionals before confrontation if you can.”
That came from herself.
She never claimed every situation matched hers.
Good.
Ames supported from distance.
No hero narrative.
Once Nora told him:
“I used to hate when people said why didn’t she leave.”
“What do you say now?”
“Sometimes I still ask myself.”
Ames nodded.
“Me too.”
Then:
“But I know the better question is what made leaving dangerous.”

Not an excuse.

Darby visited the organization once at seventeen to drop off donated toiletries.
No speech.
No inspirational child-survivor moment.
She carried boxes.
