Chapter 7 - FAMILY RETENTION

The federal search of Victoria’s townhouse occurred while I remained hospitalized.

Harris did not show me every image immediately.

Rachel Kim, appointed to represent my unborn child’s future interests, argued that medical stability came first.

I insisted on the basic findings.

Behind a locked door on Victoria’s second floor, agents found a nursery.

Not an unfinished room.

A completed one.

Cream walls.

A white crib.

Drawers filled with newborn clothes.

A rocking chair beside framed copies of my ultrasound images.

The photographs had been downloaded from Evergreen Fertility.

A monogrammed blanket lay across the crib.

V.L.

Victoria Lane.

The closet contained maternity photographs edited to place Victoria’s face over mine.

The images were crude at close range.

From across a courtroom, they could support a narrative that she had prepared emotionally for a child carried by a surrogate.

A nanny contract began on my expected delivery date.

A private pediatrician had been retained.

The hospital birth plan instructed staff not to permit “carrier interference.”

I became nauseated reading that phrase.

Agents found a series of audio recordings.

Margaret coached Victoria through imagined questions.

Why did Elizabeth carry your baby?

Because my medical condition made pregnancy impossible.

Why did the Carters hide the arrangement?

Because Elizabeth became emotionally unstable.

What will you tell the child?

That she was always wanted.

Victoria cried during the rehearsal.

Not every emotion was false.

Her infertility had been real.

She had undergone years of treatment and lost two pregnancies.

Her suffering explained why the nursery existed in her imagination.

It did not explain poisoning me.

It did not authorize replacing my name.

Harris discovered a locked cabinet containing copies of three other women’s medical records.

Nora’s was one.

Mine was the newest.

Each file included payments to doctors, attorneys, and court consultants.

My obstetrician, Dr. Thomas Keane, had received $190,000 from Lane Family Futures over eighteen months.

The payments were labeled prenatal-access research.

He had never disclosed a financial relationship.

Dr. Keane was the man who had reassured me my contractions were stress.

He had signed the medical note calling me vulnerable to “pregnancy-related catastrophizing.”

He had also uploaded the false intended-parent agreement to the hospital.
