Chapter 14 - RICHARD’S ESCAPE ATTEMPT
Richard remained in federal custody until a judge approved temporary release for a medical procedure under guard.
During transport back, a contracted driver deviated from the approved route.
The vehicle stopped inside a parking structure.
Richard attempted to leave through a service stairwell using clothes hidden beneath a maintenance panel.
Officers arrested him before he reached the street.
The driver had received two hundred thousand dollars through an account tied to one of Richard’s former companies.
The escape attempt added charges and destroyed his remaining argument for pretrial release.
It also showed the fraud network still contained loyal or frightened participants.
Investigators searched the driver’s home.
They found a list of evidence-storage locations and one handwritten instruction:
FRAME FIRST.
The photograph.
Celeste and Richard still believed Amelia’s picture contained something not yet found.
Forensic technicians examined the frame again.
The handwriting had been fully exposed.
No additional note appeared.
The wooden border contained a narrow hollow channel.
Inside was a microSD card wrapped in waxed paper.
Amelia had hidden a second copy.
The card contained no new murder confession.
It contained raw financial data and one video message addressed to Sophie.
The prosecutor allowed us to view the personal message separately.
Amelia sat in her office.
She looked tired.
“Sophie, you may be much older when you see this. If people tell you I cared more about work than coming home, that is not true. I am doing this because adults are using safety as a reason nobody can ask questions.”
Sophie reached toward the screen.
Amelia continued.
“You are not responsible for protecting my evidence. Give it to a safe adult. Then go be a child.”
The video ended with Amelia smiling at someone entering the room.
The timestamp was five days before her death.
The person’s voice belonged to Celeste.
“Still recording everything?”
Amelia answered, “Only what people may later deny.”
The microSD data duplicated the cloud drive, preventing defense claims that investigators assembled files after her death.
It also exposed another account holding four million dollars.
The money had not gone to Celeste or Richard.
It went to a legal-defense reserve controlled by Paul Mercer, Carter Meridian’s former general counsel.
Paul said Amelia authorized it.
No record supported him.
The fraud widened.
Not every new name belonged to the murder.
Paul had helped conceal invoices after Amelia raised concerns. He had not entered the garage or planned the crash.
His conduct would be charged separately.
Sophie watched Amelia’s message once.
Then asked to watch the tooth-fairy recording instead.
