Chapter 5 - GERALD’S COFFEE

Gerald requested a cooperation meeting.

His lawyer sat beside him. Mara sat beside me. Detective Morales recorded every word.

Gerald admitted he signed the trust amendment.

Patricia told him it merely delayed Emma’s beneficiary rights until adulthood.

The actual language excluded adopted descendants permanently and gave Vanessa an option to purchase trust shares at a reduced valuation.

“When did you learn the truth?” I asked.

“The day Ethan confronted me.”

“Before he disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I asked him not to report it until we corrected it privately.”

“You asked him to hide fraud.”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You were trying to save the family’s name.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Gerald described the night Ethan vanished.

Patricia asked her son to come to the family house for a meeting. Vanessa was there. A family physician named Dr. Vincent Hall arrived with medication and forms.

They told Ethan Gerald was having chest pain.

When Ethan entered the library, Vanessa locked the door.

Patricia accused him of threatening the company and humiliating Lily.

Ethan attempted to leave.

Gerald held one arm.

Vanessa held the other.

Dr. Hall injected a sedative.

“You helped them drug him?” I asked.

“I believed they were taking him for evaluation.”

“Why would a competent adult need evaluation?”

“Patricia said he had threatened suicide.”

“Did you hear him threaten it?”

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

They carried Ethan into the hidden basement room.

He remained there overnight.

Gerald said Patricia allowed him to see Ethan once.

Ethan was awake but disoriented.

“He told me to get Rachel,” Gerald said.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Patricia said Rachel was the cause of the breakdown.”

The old pattern sat in front of me.

Patricia made an accusation.

Gerald treated the accusation as evidence because resisting his wife required more courage than sacrificing someone else.

The next morning, Ethan was transported to Willow Ridge Behavioral Center, a private facility two hours away.

Gerald believed he remained there.

Detective Morales had already checked every licensed hospital under Ethan’s name.

Willow Ridge had not disclosed him.

Gerald provided a brass key from his pocket.

It belonged to a safe-deposit box Ethan had opened years earlier.

Inside, investigators found financial records, trust drafts, and a video from the Hayes garage.

The video showed Ethan being carried toward a black SUV.

Vanessa held his feet.

Dr. Hall supported his shoulders.

Patricia opened the rear door.

Gerald stood beside the vehicle holding his coffee mug.

He watched them load his son.

He did not help.

He did not stop them.

Then he turned toward the security camera and raised the mug slightly.

A tiny green light blinked near its rim.

The mug contained a hidden camera.

Gerald had been recording his family.

“Why?” I asked.

“I was afraid no one would believe me later.”

“You wanted evidence.”

“Yes.”

“You had evidence while Ethan was still in front of you.”

Gerald began crying.

“I thought recording was action.”

It was not.

Investigators examined the mug.

The memory card contained weeks of conversations.

One file was labeled BREAKFAST.

May you like

It had been programmed to begin recording at 7:00 on the morning Vanessa threw the skillet.

Gerald knew something was planned before Emma entered the room.
