CHAP 3 — Danielle’s Envelope

My hands shook so badly Nurse Brenda had to help me open the envelope.

Inside were three things.

A letter.

A notarized standby guardianship document.

And a flash drive taped to a photograph.

The photograph showed Danielle holding a newborn Toby in a hospital bed. Her face was tired, glowing, and unmistakably afraid. On the back, she had written:

He was born before Oliver owned the story.

I unfolded the letter.

Alice,

If Toby is with you, then something has gone wrong.

I know I have no right to ask anything from you after what happened. I believed a lie because it was easier than believing the man I loved was dangerous.

You were right about Oliver.

He forged the messages. He made me think you betrayed me because you were the only person who saw him clearly.

I am sorry. I have written those words a thousand times and never had the courage to send them.

Toby is not Oliver’s son. Oliver married me when Toby was six months old and has spent ten years trying to turn custody into control. My father’s estate goes to Toby when he turns eighteen. Oliver can access nothing unless he controls him.

If I die, disappear, or become “unfit,” I want Toby with you. You are the only person I ever trusted before Oliver taught me not to trust myself.

Please believe my son.

Please believe me now, even if I was too late to believe you then.

Danielle.

I could not breathe.

Twelve years of anger, grief, and unanswered questions collapsed inside my chest.

Toby watched me with terrified hope.

“She said you had two different eyes,” he whispered. “She said you could see lies.”

I wiped my face.

“I missed one once.”

His chin trembled.

“She said you’d come anyway.”

I looked at the standby guardianship document. It named me, Alice Miriam Kensington, as emergency caregiver and nominated guardian if Danielle Blackwood became deceased, incapacitated, or unreachable.

Dr. Harlan stepped closer.

“We need to tell you something.”

My stomach dropped.

Brenda’s eyes filled.

“Danielle was in the vehicle too.”

“No.”

Dr. Harlan’s voice softened.

“She died at the scene.”

The room went soundless.

Toby curled inward like the words struck his body.

I moved before thinking, sitting carefully on the edge of the bed and taking his uninjured hand.

He held on so hard my fingers hurt.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He began sobbing into my sleeve.

The gray-suited liaison looked shaken now.

“I’ll call emergency placement review.”

“No,” Toby cried. “No. He’ll find me.”

I looked at Mr. Hale.

“You hear that?”

He nodded slowly.

Outside the room, voices rose.

A man demanded entry.

Brenda’s face tightened.

“That’s Oliver Blackwood.”

Toby’s hand went ice-cold in mine.

I stood between the bed and the door.

Oliver entered wearing a black overcoat, perfect hair, and the furious calm of a man used to being obeyed.

His eyes moved over Toby, then over me.

“Who the hell are you?”

May you like

I held up Danielle’s letter.

“The woman she trusted when she stopped trusting you.”
