Chapter 5 - THE SILVER SLIPPER
Lily’s charm bracelet remained locked inside Renata’s jewelry safe.
Renata told Grant the child repeatedly tore bracelets from her wrist, so she stored valuable pieces for protection.
Police recovered twelve items belonging to Olivia and Lily.
The silver ballet slipper contained a seam nearly invisible beneath its sole.
A forensic technician opened it.
Inside was an encrypted microdrive.
Olivia had hidden evidence inside a gift small enough for Lily to carry.
Renata found the charm after the death but apparently never realized it opened.
She placed it in her safe while searching for a larger flash drive.
The microdrive held foundation invoices, banking records, emails, and copies of messages between Olivia and Renata.
Olivia:
These vendors lead back to you.
Renata:
You are misunderstanding legitimate consulting structures.
Olivia:
I spoke with the banks.
Renata:
Think carefully before you embarrass Grant’s family in public.
Olivia:
This is not his shame unless he chooses to hide it.
The drive also contained a draft letter to Grant.
Olivia wrote that he had signed several foundation payments without reading the supporting documents.
She did not accuse him of joining the theft.
She accused him of valuing peace over oversight.
Grant read the letter in the presence of independent counsel.
“She knew exactly what I was,” he said.
The board temporarily removed him from foundation decision-making while auditors examined his approvals.
He protested for less than a minute.
Then he signed the recusal.
The Callahan family had treated the foundation as proof of generosity.
Olivia’s files showed an institution used to purchase Renata’s loyalty and Grant’s comfort.
Money meant for shelters, pediatric care, and school programs had funded the woman who killed the person questioning it.
The drive contained no video of the fall.
It did contain a directory named GREENHOUSE.
The folder was encrypted separately.
The password hint read:
LILY’S FIRST FULL SENTENCE.
Grant looked at me.
“Do you know it?”
I did.
Olivia had asked Lily, at age three, what she thought rain smelled like.
Lily answered:
The garden waking up.
The password opened the folder.
A video appeared.
Olivia sat in her private study on the morning of the auction. Lily colored beside her.
“If Grant receives this,” Olivia said, “Renata has either lied her way out again or something has happened to me.”
She explained the financial scheme, the missing money, and her intention to report it.
Then she leaned closer.
“Renata has begun questioning Lily about my files. Emma is the only person in this house Lily runs toward without being told.”
My throat tightened.
Olivia continued.
“If I become unavailable, Emma must not be left alone to fight this family. Contact my attorney, Maya Lawson. Follow the guardianship instructions in the sealed estate memorandum.”
Grant looked sharply toward the screen.
“I never saw a guardianship memorandum.”
Olivia’s expression changed as someone knocked beyond the camera.
“Lily, go to Emma.”
The child in the video slid from her chair.
Renata entered.
“You really are planning to destroy everything,” she said.
Olivia did not turn off the recording.
The camera continued as the two women left the room.
The image showed an empty chair.
The audio followed them through the open doorway.
Their voices moved toward the conservatory.
Then Renata said:
“If you tell Grant, I’ll make sure he believes the unstable widow story before you can finish one sentence.”
Olivia answered:
“I am not a widow.”
Renata laughed.
“Not yet.”
A door slammed.
The sound of footsteps rose toward the upper landing.
