Chapter 25 - NASH LEAVES HOME

Nash chose environmental engineering.

Nothing to do with real estate.

Nothing to do with fraud.

Thank God.

He left for college three hours away.

First dorm night, he texted:

Food sucks.

I replied:

Eat when your mother learns obedience.

Three dots appeared.

Then:

Too soon forever.

I laughed until I cried.

He called ten minutes later.

“Mom, that was awful.”

“You started.”

“No I didn’t.”

“Existing provocatively.”

He groaned.

Humor arrived only because the fear had stopped owning the sentence.

Graham helped move him in.

Brooke carried boxes.

I did not compete over who got the final hug.

Nash hugged all of us.

Then said:

“Leave.”

Parenthood succeeds toward dismissal.

Marjorie sent him a card through agreed channels.

No money.

No guilt.

It said:

Study something you choose.

That was good.

Nash kept it.

He did not call her.

Yet.

I sold one Ashford duplex and used part of proceeds to pay off my new house.

No symbolic reason.

Interest rates.

Money became boring again.

That was victory.

Graham and I had coffee once after move-in.

He asked:

“Do you ever wish we had stayed married?”

“No.”

He laughed softly.

“Fast answer.”

“I’m not angry saying it.”

“That’s worse.”

“No. Better.”

I loved who we had been.

I hated what he allowed himself to become under pressure.

I respected some of what he became afterward.

None required remarriage.

May you like

Complexity without reunion.

That was healthy.
