Chapter 13 - THE FATHER’S FILE
James agreed to be interviewed.
He did not demand to know what Ryan meant.
He did not contact Emily first.
Military counsel and Detective Ruiz questioned him together because the missing drive might contain information related to both the domestic case and potential misuse of government data.
“Have you ever communicated privately with Linda?” Ruiz asked.
“Only regarding family events.”
“Did she ever ask about Emily’s trust?”
“Once, after the wedding.”
“What did you say?”
“That it was Emily’s business.”
“Did you threaten Ryan?”
“I told him if he harmed my daughter, I would support her in leaving.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
“Why?”
“Emily called me crying after an argument. She later said it was resolved.”
“Did you report concern?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“She denied being afraid.”
Ruiz’s expression did not change.
“Did you believe her?”
James took several seconds.
“No.”
That answer mattered.
He had sensed danger earlier than he admitted.
He chose distance because Emily insisted she was fine and because he feared becoming the authoritarian father Ryan already accused him of being.
Restraint became avoidance.
Ryan exploited it.
Military investigators asked about James’s travel records, personal files, and whether he had ever used government resources to investigate Ryan.
“No.”
“Did you request background information about him before the marriage?”
“Yes.”
Emily did not know that.
James hired a civilian investigator to verify Ryan’s employment and criminal history after noticing inconsistencies in stories about his father.
The report found no convictions and no major financial judgments.
James closed the matter.
“Where is the report?” Ruiz asked.
“In my home office.”
The file was gone.
A search found an empty folder and evidence that someone had accessed James’s house while he attended a conference six months earlier.
There was no forced entry.
Linda had possessed a spare key because Emily once asked her to water plants during James’s deployment.
James never changed the locks.
The investigator who prepared the report, Thomas Hale, had retained a copy.
It contained one detail James did not remember.
Ryan’s father, George, had died after falling down basement stairs.
The death was ruled accidental.
Linda was the only witness.
No criminal charges were filed.
Years later, Megan told police that Ryan sometimes said his father “made his mother afraid.”
Ryan told Emily the same story when apologizing for grabbing her wrist.
The family history may have shaped him.
It did not excuse him.
Hale’s report also mentioned a prior complaint from a neighbor who heard prolonged shouting at Linda’s house. Police responded but found no one willing to make a statement.
The name Karen Vale appeared in the report.
She had been listed as Linda’s emergency contact.
James had read the file too quickly.
He remembered criminal-history results and financial records.
He did not remember the name.
“Did you tell Linda you investigated Ryan?” Ruiz asked.
“No.”
“Could she have learned?”
“If she entered my house.”
Ryan’s statement about videos of James remained unverified.
Then technicians recovered data from Karen’s computer showing a folder titled BENNETT.
Inside were short surveillance clips.
James entering a grief-support meeting after Sarah’s death.
James drinking alone at a restaurant.
James arguing with Emily outside her college graduation.
None showed criminal conduct.
All could be edited to portray him as unstable or controlling.
One clip was different.
It showed James meeting privately with Howard Lane, the trust officer, six months before Emily’s wedding.
The audio was incomplete.
James said, “If she marries him, we need the safeguard active.”
Ryan’s attorney obtained the clip through discovery and argued James had manipulated the trust to exclude Ryan.
Howard Lane produced the full meeting record.
The “safeguard” referred to a standard requirement that large distributions receive independent review during the first five years of marriage.
Sarah had written the provision.
James did not add it.
The cropped video had removed the explanation.
It demonstrated how the missing drive may have been intended for leverage rather than truth.
Then a forensic accountant found a payment from Linda to Thomas Hale.
It occurred one month after James hired him.
Hale denied receiving it.
The money went to an account created using his identity.
