Chapter 25 - VICTOR’S RELEASE HEARING
Victor became eligible for parole review more than twenty years after the gala.
He had completed violence programs, technical education, and years without disciplinary incidents.
Eligibility did not mean release.
The board reviewed offense severity, rehabilitation, risk, victim statements, and supervision plans.
Daniel and I received notice.
He asked what I wanted.
“I don’t know.”
“Do you want to oppose?”
“I want the record accurate.”
We submitted a statement.
Victor deliberately struck Daniel with a champagne bottle.
He threatened further violence.
He participated in financial and safety crimes.
His later conduct showed sustained improvement.
We did not recommend a specific outcome.
The parole board denied release at the first hearing, citing severity and insufficient community plan.
A future review remained possible.
Victor sent no angry response.
Two years later, he presented a stronger plan and received supervised release to a transitional residence.
No contact with us.
No corporate work.
No access to BPS facilities.
News outlets asked whether I feared him.
“Yes.”
“Do you think people can change?”
“Yes.”
“Do you forgive him?”
“I do not use one answer for all three questions.”
Victor worked in a furniture-repair shop.
He gave no interviews.
His supervision reports remained private.
Elizabeth was twenty-one.
She asked whether she could meet him.
Daniel’s face tightened.
I said:
“You are an adult.”
“Do you think I should?”
“I think you should know why you want to.”
“Curiosity.”
“Then prepare for curiosity not becoming closure.”
She met him once with a therapist present.
Victor apologized to her for harming her father and using family as justification.
Elizabeth asked:
“Did you hate Daniel?”
“No.”
“Then why hit him?”
“I believed fear would make your mother obey.”
The answer disturbed her more than hatred would have.
She chose no ongoing relationship.
Victor respected it.
That mattered.
It did not undo the bottle.
Daniel never met him again.
