Chapter 7 - THE VOICE THEY BUILT

The audio was synthetic.
A specialist identified unnatural transitions between words, inconsistent room tone, and fragments drawn from separate recordings.
Julian had hours of my voice.
Arguments.
Phone calls.
Birthday videos.
Messages I sent while crying.
The fabricated threat was convincing enough to delay my return to work.
Parents at the school learned that a teacher was under psychological review.
My name spread through local social media.
Some posts called me dangerous.
Others published photographs from the birthday showing green frosting across my dress.
Julian’s friends described me as drunk.
I had consumed no alcohol.
The damage did not require everyone to believe him.
It required uncertainty.
My school placed me on unpaid leave after the paid review period ended.
The union challenged the decision, but rent, legal bills, and medical expenses continued.
I owned a house I could not safely enter and property I could not sell while title litigation remained active.
Financial pressure was another form of restraint.
Ernesto offered money.
I refused too quickly.
He said, “Accepting help is not surrendering control.”
I accepted enough to cover three months.
That choice felt harder than enduring.
Police verified that Julian’s prepaid phone had accessed an online voice-cloning service.
The account used cryptocurrency purchased through Cross Family Management.
Ofelia claimed an employee created it.
The company had no employees.
Dr. Voss’s position worsened when investigators searched his office.
They found templates for emergency-capacity evaluations and payments from families seeking control of elderly relatives.
My case was not the only questionable one.
Voss entered a cooperation discussion.
He admitted Ofelia hired him to review “behavioral evidence” about me.
He never met me.
He signed a preliminary recommendation because Ofelia said a full consultation would follow.
“Did you know the video was synthetic?” Detective Torres asked.
“I suspected editing.”
“Why sign?”
“Mrs. Cross said Valeria had become violent and the family needed to protect property before she destroyed it.”
My alleged instability had become their universal key.
Voss claimed he did not know the full property plan.
His payments showed otherwise only if prosecutors could prove the codes.
Then the anonymous sender contacted Rachel.
One encrypted message:
THE CORRIDOR CONTRACT EXPIRES ON VALERIA’S THIRTIETH BIRTHDAY PLUS THIRTY DAYS.
My birthday had not been a random celebration.
May you like
It was the beginning of a deadline.
If the forged documents failed within thirty days, Julian and Ofelia stood to lose far more than a house.
