CHAP 4 — The Arrest at the Gates

Victoria did not run well in designer heels.
That was the only mercy in watching her try to escape.
She darted toward the side gate, clutching her dress, blonde hair flying loose from its perfect waves. One of the estate guards hesitated, unsure whether to stop the woman who had been treated for months as future lady of the house.
Richard’s voice cut through the street.
“Stop her.”
The guard moved.
Police reached the gate first.
Victoria turned sharply and nearly fell. An officer caught her arm. She screamed as if she were the one being harmed.
“Let go of me! I live here!”
Richard strode toward her.
I had seen him angry before. At investors. At failed deals. At contractors who lied about deadlines.
This was different.
This was rage stripped of vanity.
“Arrest her immediately!” he roared. “She touched my children!”
The officer looked toward me and the boys.
I held up my phone.
“I have her recorded admitting she planted the watch. The children say she locked them in the basement. They have cuts from escaping.”
Victoria shrieked, “She is lying! She manipulated them! She wants money!”
Noah shouted from behind me, “You locked us in!”
Ethan added, “You said boarding school forever!”
Liam whispered, “Dark basement.”
Richard flinched at that.
Police separated everyone quickly.
One officer knelt to speak to the boys, but they refused to move away from me. The officer, a woman named Daniels, did not force them. She looked at their bare feet, torn sleeves, shaking hands, and then at Richard.
“Sir, we need medical evaluation for the children.”
“Yes,” Richard said immediately.
Then he looked at me.
“They’ll go with Emily.”
Victoria laughed wildly.
“She’s the accused thief!”
Richard turned on her.
“You planted the Rolex.”
“You don’t know that!”
He looked toward the mansion.
“Then let’s check every camera, every access log, every room entry, every staff device, every backup security server.”
Victoria’s mouth opened.
Closed.
There it was.
The truth in silence.
A second police cruiser blocked the service exit. Another officer walked Victoria back toward the main gate. When the cuffs clicked around her wrists, her face changed from panic to hatred.
She stared at me.
“You ruined everything.”
I held Liam tighter.

“No,” I said. “You touched the wrong children.”
Richard heard it.
His shoulders dropped as if the words had crushed him.
Paramedics arrived next. The boys screamed when anyone tried to take them from me, so I climbed into the ambulance with them. Richard started to follow.
Ethan shook his head.
“No Daddy.”
Richard stopped at the ambulance door.
The devastation on his face was real.
But real devastation does not undo failure.
“I’ll follow,” he said hoarsely.
At the hospital, doctors cleaned the boys’ cuts. None needed stitches. Their injuries were minor, the doctor said.
Minor.
That word made me furious.
Because children can bleed lightly and still be wounded deeply.
Liam refused to let go of my sleeve.
Noah kept asking if I would be sent away again.
Ethan stared at Richard through the glass of the examination room like a tiny judge.
Richard stood outside the door, hands hanging uselessly at his sides.
A billionaire with no purchase left.
No command.

No shortcut.
Only the consequences of not listening.
