Chapter 3 - PLEASE SPARE ME
Vanessa claimed the sentence concerned a birthday photograph.
No photograph followed.
The video showed her positioning herself near the kitchen doorway with her phone held low and recording before Gerald entered.
Patricia remained visible through the open patio door.
She watched Lily carry the soda inside.
Then she nodded toward Gerald.
The assault had not been spontaneous.
Someone had arranged the moment.
Detective Blake interviewed the guests individually before family members could coordinate further. Three described Patricia complaining that I “needed to be taught what happens when children have no discipline.”
One guest heard Vanessa say that the party would “finally give the court what it needed.”
Another saw Patricia place a leather document case inside her study shortly before cake.
My profession made the allegations more surreal.
I had defended people accused of building cases through edited videos, pressured witnesses, and false documents. I knew how much damage a coherent lie could cause before evidence caught up.
Now my own family had attempted to manufacture one around a three-year-old.
Lily’s formal forensic interview occurred at a child-advocacy center two days after her discharge.
James and I watched from another room with her court-appointed attorney, Rachel Kim.
The interviewer began with toys and colors.
Then she asked about the birthday.
“Grandpa was mad,” Lily said.
“What was he mad about?”
“The drink.”
“Who gave it to you?”
“Aunt Ness.”
“Did she say anything?”
“She said take it to the kitchen and ask Grandpa if I could have it.”
“What happened when you asked?”
“He said dirty paws.”
“Then?”
“He got his belt.”
“Had you seen the belt before?”
Lily nodded.
“Where?”
“At Grandma’s.”
The interviewer did not ask leading questions. She invited Lily to describe what happened.
Lily said Gerald had struck her legs before.
Patricia called it “learning time.”
Vanessa sometimes held the phone.
“Why did she use a phone?” the interviewer asked.
“To show Mommy when I was bad.”
I had never received a video.
“What did Grandma say during learning time?”
“She says, ‘Spare the rod, spoil the child.’”
“Do you know what that means?”
“It means Grandpa gets the belt.”
“Why did you say, ‘Please spare me’?”
Lily looked confused.
“Grandma says ask him to spare me. Then he uses the flat side.”
The language had been taught.
So had the hierarchy of pain.
The interviewer asked about her arm.
Lily described reaching for a cookie, Gerald pulling her backward, and hearing a pop.
“Did anyone take you to a doctor?”
“Grandma.”
“What did she tell you to say?”
“That Mommy knew.”
“Did Mommy know?”
“No.”
“Why didn’t you tell Mommy later?”
“Grandma said Mommy would go to jail because she left me.”
I pressed my fist against my mouth.
Patricia had turned our absence into a threat.
She had made Lily believe the adults hurting her were the only ones protecting me.
After the interview, Rachel faced us.
“Lily wants no contact with those relatives.”
“She will have none,” I said.
Rachel looked at James.
He nodded.
“No contact.”
“Not temporary no contact until your mother apologizes,” Rachel said. “The current recommendation is complete separation while investigations proceed.”
“I understand.”
Rachel’s expression said she had heard that sentence from too many adults who later weakened.
The police obtained a warrant for Gerald and Patricia’s house.
Inside the pantry beside the kitchen, detectives found a narrow wooden stool, a belt hanging from a hook, and a phone tripod facing the wall.
Blue crayon marks covered the baseboard at a child’s height.
The study held Patricia’s leather case.
Inside were photographs of our apartment, copies of my work calendar, Lily’s preschool records, the forged medical authorization, and a petition seeking emergency guardianship.
The petition alleged I was violent, James was weak, and Lily required removal before we moved her “beyond family reach.”
Attached as Exhibit Seven was a birthday-party incident summary.
