Chapter 16 - THE OLD REPORT
The hardest evidence concerned paternity.
Victoria’s defense argued she genuinely believed Sophia might not be mine.
The old private test destroyed that claim partly.
The laboratory expert explained:
No legal chain of custody.
Therefore not court-certifiable.
But genetic profile strongly supported paternity.
Victoria downloaded the report.
Then wrote:
Biology likely settled. Legal status remains usable.
That sentence entered evidence.
Usable.
Sophia’s identity as a tool.
Victoria’s attorney argued “usable” referred to legitimate trust procedure.
The jury would decide.
Another email:
If Alexander speaks directly to Emma, entire structure collapses.
Structure.
Not misunderstanding.
The prosecutor asked:
“What structure?”
Henry answered:
“Keeping Sophia’s beneficiary trigger suspended until foundation debt could be refinanced.”
There it was.
The central motive repeated under oath.
Victoria chose to testify.
Against advice, probably.
She was seventy-two by then.
Elegant.
Controlled.
She admitted diverting funds.
Called it temporary reallocation.
“Did Alexander approve?”
“Not specifically.”
“Did Emma approve?”
“No.”
“Did the trust approve?”
“I believed my authority was enough.”
“Why forge receipts?”
“I did not forge them personally.”
“Did you know they were false?”
Pause.
“Yes.”
“Why tell Emma Alexander was dead?”
“I thought he might die.”
“He was alive the next morning.”
“I had already informed her.”
“Why not correct it?”
“Because she was unstable.”
“Based on what?”
“Her reaction.”
The prosecutor waited.
“She reacted badly to being told her fiancé died?”
Victoria realized too late.
“Yes.”
“Why restrict internet?”
“Security.”
“Why intercept letters?”
“To prevent escalation.”
“Why tell Alexander Emma wanted no contact?”
“Eventually she did.”
“After years believing he was dead.”
Victoria looked toward me.
“I knew my son. He would have sacrificed everything for them.”
The prosecutor answered:
“That was his choice to make.”
Victoria’s face changed.
For the first time, I saw the core.
She did not trust me with my own loyalty.
She believed she knew what I should protect.
Family foundation.
Sterling legacy.
Reputation.
