CHAP 3 — The Timeline

Marco had built a timeline on a whiteboard.

A photographer should not have needed a whiteboard to explain a wedding.

That alone told me how ugly it was.

He had the ceremony schedule, photo timestamps, video clips, venue access logs, and still frames printed in rows. The more I looked, the less the wedding looked like a celebration.

It looked like a trap with flowers.

“This first photo was taken at 4:12 p.m.,” Marco said, pointing to the bridal suite image. “Jessica’s mother is holding the ultrasound in the mirror. The date on it is three months before the wedding.”

He moved to the next print.

“This one is 5:48 p.m. Service hallway. Jessica with this man.”

The man was tall, dark-haired, wearing a black suit without a boutonniere. Not family. Not wedding party. Not staff.

“Who is he?” I asked.

“I didn’t know. So I checked the vendor entrance footage. He signed in as Eric Lane.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Marco opened a folder on his laptop.

“Public records show Eric Lane co-owns a small real estate holding company with Jessica’s brother.”

My mouth went dry.

“Did David know him?”

“I don’t think so.”

The next clip played with faint audio.

Jessica stood in the service hallway, veil lifted, one hand on Eric’s chest.

Eric said, “You sure he won’t question the dates?”

Jessica answered, “He wants to be loved too badly.”

My eyes filled before I could stop them.

Not for Jessica.

For my son.

Marco paused the clip like he was sorry to let me hear more.

I nodded for him to continue.

Charles Whitfield stepped into frame.

“No drama tonight,” he said. “The Thompson documents get signed after the toast. Then we let the baby come early and everyone calls it a miracle.”

Eric laughed.

“What about David?”

Jessica’s face did not change.

“David believes what I tell him.”

I pressed my hand against my stomach.

My son had stood at the altar less than an hour later.

He had looked at that woman like she was sunlight.

Marco clicked to another timestamp.

Reception. 9:17 p.m.

David at a side table with Charles, Jessica, and a man I recognized from the estate meeting.

The “harmony” lawyer.

David had a champagne glass in his hand and a flushed, happy face. Jessica leaned against him, smiling. Charles slid papers across the table.

“It was supposed to be a photo of the families signing a guest book,” Marco said. “But when I zoomed in…”

He enlarged the image.

It was not a guest book.

It was a trust acknowledgment form.

Not the final transfer, but the first step.

A statement that David intended to establish a marital family trust for Jessica and “all current or expected issue.”

Current or expected.

My knees weakened.

The baby.

The child had been part of the document before my son even knew he existed.

Marco whispered, “Mrs. Thompson, I’m sorry.”

My grief turned then.

It did not disappear.

It sharpened.

“They targeted my son,” I said.

My voice sounded strange in the studio.

Marco looked down.

“They faked the entire timeline.”

The words tore out of me before I could stop them.

“They targeted my son! They faked the entire timeline!”

I slammed my hand onto his desk so hard the printed photos jumped.

Then I reached for my phone.

The first call went to the trust office emergency line.

“This is Eleanor Thompson,” I said. “Cancel the trust transfers immediately. They are frauds.”
