Chapter 4 - THE ROOM CLOSES

At 9:20, the room was full of people Mason could not charm.

That frightened him more than the locks.

Detective Hale picked up my dead phone from the floor using gloves.

“Mr. Vale, did you take this from Mrs. Bennett?”

Mason smiled.

“She dropped it. I was checking if she needed help.”

Elaine played the study audio from the wall system.

Mason’s own voice filled the room.

“Got it. Face ID worked while she was down.”

His smile vanished.

Chloe looked at him.

“You said you were calling an ambulance.”

Mason snapped, “I was.”

“No,” I said from the floor while the paramedic wrapped gauze around my head. “He was trying to access the trust portal.”

“That’s a lie,” Mason said.

Elaine opened her binder.

“No. It’s a felony attempt.”

She handed Detective Hale a printed log.

“After the phone unlocked, there were four failed access attempts to Bennett Family Trust administration, one attempted password reset, and one blocked request to add a new authorized device.”

Detective Hale glanced at Mason.

“You work fast.”

Mason said nothing.

Dr. Reyes sat with Chloe on the far side of the room.

Not close enough to trap her.

Close enough to speak.

“Chloe, are you hurt?”

Chloe shook her head.

Her eyes kept moving between Mason and me.

“He said you were going to drug me.”

“I requested an evaluation,” I said. “Not punishment.”

“He said you were giving Ethan everything.”

“Ethan’s trust belongs to Ethan’s care. It was never mine to give.”

Mason laughed bitterly.

“You people are unbelievable. She’s sitting there bleeding and still performing saint mother.”

Detective Hale stepped closer.

“Mr. Vale, stop talking.”

But Mason could not.

Men like him depend on control, and silence feels like losing.

“She built all this,” he said, pointing at me. “The house, the locks, the legal trap. She wanted Chloe declared unstable so nobody would believe her.”

Elaine’s voice was cold.

“Nobody needed to declare anything. We documented your communications.”

Mason’s eyes flicked to Chloe.

Too fast.

Too late.

Chloe saw.

Dr. Reyes saw.

I saw.

“What communications?” Chloe whispered.

Elaine looked at the clinician first, silently asking permission to continue in front of Chloe.

Dr. Reyes nodded carefully.

Elaine placed three pages on the coffee table.

“Messages between Mason and a private lender he controls. Messages discussing your credit. Your medication schedule. Your anger toward Ethan. Your mother’s security system. And this one.”

She read aloud.

Chloe is easy when she is off treatment. Push the brother angle. She’ll do the rest.

Chloe stopped breathing.

The room changed.

Her rage had filled it before.

Now something else entered.

Horror.

She looked at Mason.

“You wrote that?”

Mason’s face hardened.

“They’re manipulating you.”

“You wrote that?”

He did not answer.

Chloe’s hands began to shake.

Dr. Reyes leaned closer.

“Chloe, look at me. You’re safe in this room. Breathe with me.”

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“I hit my mother.”

No one spoke.

Her voice broke.

“I hit my mother because you said she was stealing from me.”

Mason moved toward her.

A uniformed officer blocked him.

“Sit down.”

Mason sat.

Not because he obeyed.

Because he was outnumbered.

I watched Chloe crumble from the floor, and my heart broke in two directions.

May you like

One for the blood running down my neck.

One for my daughter realizing she had become the weapon in someone else’s hand.
