Chapter 23 - THE BOARD MEMBER WHO BROKE
Daniel testified from a hospital bed.
His face was swollen. One wrist was fractured. He asked that no cameras be allowed.
He did not want residents to see him as a victim before they heard how he had failed them.
“I signed without reading enough,” he said. “Marla told me children would lose heat if I delayed the repairs.”
“Did you receive money?” Naomi asked.
“No.”
“Did anyone pay your medical debt?”
“Twenty thousand dollars disappeared from the balance. I thought the hospital had corrected an insurance error.”
Bank records later showed HavenBridge Resident Services made the payment through a patient-assistance charity.
Marla arranged it without Daniel’s knowledge.
The payment gave her leverage.
She showed him the transaction and threatened to report it as a bribe unless he signed additional papers.
“I should have gone to the board,” Daniel said.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Shame.”
One word explained more than a long excuse.
He had believed admitting his first mistake would destroy the trust residents placed in him.
So he hid it.
The hiding made the mistake useful to people who understood shame as a tool.
Daniel described his kidnapping.
Two men forced him into the gray van after he left the board meeting. They demanded access codes and made him sign blank pages.
He escaped briefly and called Mom from the convenience store.
They found him before police arrived.
For days, they moved him between vacant rental properties owned through Voss companies.
He overheard them discussing the fire.
“Did Mr. Voss order it?” Naomi asked.
“I did not hear his voice.”
The answer disappointed reporters.
It strengthened Daniel’s credibility.
He did not claim what he could not prove.
Daniel had hidden the Lone Crest records months earlier after becoming suspicious of Marla.
The kidnappers discovered the storage unit through his banking history and placed him inside it so the evidence would appear to belong to him.
They did not know about Marla’s apartment camera.
Marla had installed it because she distrusted Voss.
She had saved selected clips to the hard drive as protection.
Investigators confronted her with the video.
Her silence ended.
Marla admitted forging the resident vote, manipulating Daniel, creating the false vendors, and arranging the defective repairs.
She claimed Voss designed the plan.
He promised her four million dollars after the receiver sold Rosewood.
She said the fire was intended to create smoke and electrical damage after residents had been warned to leave the building for a fake inspection.
The warning message was never sent because one of her employees failed to schedule it.
The explanation did not reduce what she had done.
A child could have died because their conspiracy made a scheduling mistake.
Marla surrendered encrypted communications with Voss.
The messages contained everything we had lacked.
Draft forged minutes sent before the supposed meeting.
Instructions to use deceased resident names because they could not deny attendance.
Orders to create public doubt about Mom.
A strategy document about discrediting me.
And one sentence from Voss:
ROSEWOOD SURVIVED THE FIRST TIME BECAUSE A CHILD RETURNED THE WRONG WALLET. THIS TIME, CONTROL THE CHILD BEFORE SHE SEES THE PAPER.
