Chapter 3 - THE RECORDING INSIDE THE SMOKE DETECTOR
The old utility shed had once been Blythe’s father’s workshop.
Thomas Sutter repaired delivery equipment there during the early years of Sutter Medical Logistics. He distrusted wireless systems and believed every important network required a backup no one remembered until the primary system failed.
When the family renovated the property, Thomas installed a battery-backed security module inside what appeared to be an ordinary smoke detector.
It recorded motion-triggered video and low-resolution audio.
The files uploaded to a secure company maintenance server through a separate cellular connection.
Reed disabled the visible house cameras six months after Blythe left.
He did not know the shed possessed its own system.
Blythe had nearly forgotten too.
Her attorney, Caroline Dane, found the device listed in an old property-security inventory after Blythe triggered the emergency alert.
Investigators obtained a warrant and preserved the server before Reed’s access could reach it.
The archive did not contain five uninterrupted years.
Battery outages created gaps.
Storms interrupted transmission.
Even so, it held hundreds of short clips.
The earliest relevant recording was dated nine months before Blythe returned.
Lorraine entered the shed carrying a collar and chain.
Ellis stood near the door crying.
LORRAINE: You cannot keep destroying this family.
ELLIS: I asked to call Mommy.
LORRAINE: She does not answer because she does not want you.
ELLIS: She sends videos.
LORRAINE: Those are for court.
Lorraine fastened the collar.
Reed appeared outside the frame.
REED: Mother, this is too far.
LORRAINE: Then bring him inside and let him ruin things for Noah.
REED: Vanessa says Ellis frightened the baby.
ELLIS: I didn’t touch him.
LORRAINE: Hear that voice? Always lying.
Reed left.
He did not remove the tether.
A later clip showed Vanessa carrying a measuring spoon and medicine bottle.
She opened the shed and ordered Ellis to swallow.
VANESSA: The Hollis investors are coming.
ELLIS: I want to see Dad.
VANESSA: If you speak tonight, Reed loses the company and Noah loses his home.
ELLIS: Mommy owns the company.
Vanessa slapped the bowl from his hands.
VANESSA: Your mother is dead to this family.
She administered the liquid.
The recording did not establish the exact medication.
The recovered bottle and hospital testing supplied that evidence.
Another clip captured the fractured rib.
Ellis attempted to follow Reed toward the house.
Lorraine pulled the tether.
He fell against the shed threshold.
Reed turned at the sound.
ELLIS: Dad.
REED: Stop fighting her.
ELLIS: My side hurts.
LORRAINE: He performs whenever you look at him.
Reed stood there for seven seconds.
Then walked inside.
The scene repeated inside Blythe’s mind long after the recording ended.
Reed had not needed to fasten the collar to participate.
He had seen it.
He had heard the impact.
He had left.
The most damaging recording occurred six weeks before Blythe returned.
Reed, Lorraine, and Vanessa stood inside the shed after Ellis had been moved temporarily for staged family photographs.
Legal papers rustled near the microphone.
REED: Once the abandonment declaration is entered, Blythe’s voting trust should transfer to me.
LORRAINE: The attorney said her father’s original instrument is a problem.
VANESSA: Then use the amendment.
REED: Caroline has the original.
LORRAINE: Caroline has not heard from Blythe in months.
REED: She receives the escrow certifications.
VANESSA: Certifications we write.
Lorraine lowered her voice.
LORRAINE: Once Ellis is declared dangerous, you obtain full medical control. Then the board will believe Blythe abandoned a troubled child and a failing company.
REED: She could come back.
LORRAINE: She won’t.
VANESSA: And if she does?
A long silence followed.
Then Reed answered.
REED: We make her leave again.
The recording captured paper tearing.
Vanessa laughed.
VANESSA: Noah will look better in the family photographs anyway.
Lorraine said:
LORRAINE: As long as no one asks why he has Daniel Pike’s ears.
Vanessa became still.
REED: What did you say?
LORRAINE: Nothing.
The recording ended.
Daniel Pike was Reed’s chief operating officer at Sutter Medical Logistics.
He had approved several of the financial transfers under investigation.
The infant’s parentage did not determine whether Ellis deserved protection.
It did explain the panic that crossed Vanessa’s face when Blythe mentioned Reed’s medical history.
A search of Vanessa’s phone recovered deleted conversations with Daniel.
VANESSA: Reed still thinks the clinic was wrong.
DANIEL: It wasn’t.
VANESSA: Lorraine wants a Whitaker test.
DANIEL: Then keep her away from the baby.
VANESSA: Once Reed controls Sutter, we leave.
Daniel Pike was not merely an affair partner.
He was part of the corporate scheme.
The hidden recorder had captured cruelty.
The messages supplied motive.
