Chapter 15 - THE MAN IN MY BUILDING

My building’s hallway camera showed the maintenance man leaving after four minutes.

He was not employed by the property company.

The image matched Scott Vale, a contractor used by Crown Meridian Security.

Police searched his residence.

They found lock tools, surveillance equipment, and photographs of my apartment interior.

Nothing appeared stolen.

A small wireless device had been placed beneath my kitchen table.

It transmitted audio for six days.

Rachel and Arthur knew I received Ethan’s warning.

They heard me reading it aloud.

They expected fear to keep me home.

When I drove to the estate, Scott followed my truck but lost me near the gated road because I took an old freight route through the hills.

Arthur’s threat to kill me was not empty.

Scott carried a handgun.

He claimed it was licensed and unrelated.

Messages from Gavin said:

If senior enters property before announcement, contain him off-site.

The word contain required context.

Scott said it meant delay.

Prosecutors argued it meant coercive restraint.

No assault occurred because he never reached me.

Charges focused on unlawful surveillance, burglary-related entry, conspiracy, and weapons violations supported by the evidence.

Scott negotiated a plea.

He identified Crown Meridian’s director as the person who arranged access.

The security company insisted the job was a lawful welfare assessment.

Its records called me:

ELDERLY DISRUPTION RISK.

Again, language built a cleaner story around intrusion.

Crown Meridian lost several licenses after regulators found other questionable monitoring contracts.

The company entered receivership.

Its director faced separate charges.

My apartment no longer felt private.

I moved temporarily into a hotel.

Then hated that too.

Miriam offered a guarded corporate residence.

I refused.

Protection could become another cage if every decision came from fear.

I returned home after police swept the apartment and replaced locks.

For the first night, I sat at the kitchen table staring at the spot where the device had been.

My silence had been recorded.

The ordinary sound of me making coffee.

Calling Ethan.

Speaking to my dead wife’s photograph.

I wanted to smash the table.

Instead, I moved it.

The floor beneath showed a lighter square where sunlight had not reached.

Evidence of position.

Not damage.

At rehabilitation, Ethan took three assisted steps.

He called afterward.

“I walked.”

“How far?”

“Far enough to hate everyone cheering.”

I laughed.

He did too.

The sound startled both of us.

Then he said Rachel had requested permission to send him a letter through counsel.

“What will you do?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you want?”

“To read it and not be affected.”

“That may not be available.”

He declined for the moment.

Choice returned in small forms.

At Royal Way, the independent monitor found that one board member had received consulting fees from Vance Meridian.

Director Paul Henley had voted repeatedly to recognize Rachel’s proxy.

The conspiracy had reached the board.
