Chapter 3

That had always been Grant’s true hunger. He wanted ownership, not partnership. Admiration, not love. And when admiration did not come freely, he tried to manufacture it by diminishing whatever stood beside him.

Even his own child.

Vanessa placed a hand on his arm. “Grant, don’t explain yourself to her. She’s manipulating you.”

I looked at Vanessa. “Where is Mrs. Alvarez?”

For the first time, Vanessa hesitated.

Mrs. Alvarez had been Lily’s nanny since she was six months old. Warm hands, silver braid, soft Spanish lullabies that could soothe Lily through any storm.

Grant answered too quickly. “She quit.”

“No,” I said.

His eyes flickered.

“She wouldn’t leave Lily,” I said. “Where is she?”

Vanessa rolled her eyes. “The old woman became hysterical. She accused me of mistreating the child. Grant had her escorted out.”

“Escorted where?”

Grant said nothing.

A cold line moved down my spine.

I turned toward the ceiling camera in the corner of the foyer. It was small enough for most guests to miss. Grant had forgotten about it because the monitors were hidden in my office, and the actual archive went to a private server he had never been permitted to access.

“Daniel,” I said aloud.

The house system activated. “Yes, Ms. Carlisle.”

Grant flinched.

“Locate Mrs. Alvarez.”

“Reviewing household logs,” the system answered. “Mrs. Sofia Alvarez last exited the residence eighteen days ago at 9:42 p.m. Security notes indicate removal by Mr. Carlisle’s private contractor. Vehicle plate recorded.”

Grant whispered, “That’s enough.”

“Continue,” I said.

“Destination trace suggests St. Agnes Medical Center. Admission record found under name Sofia A. Alvarez. Injury classification: fall trauma.”

Lily lifted her head.

Her tear-streaked face twisted with terror.

“Nana,” she whispered.

It was the first word I had heard from her.

Grant heard it too.

His eyes widened—not with joy, but fear.

I kissed Lily’s temple. “I know, baby.”

Vanessa stepped back. “I didn’t touch that woman.”

“No,” I said. “You just touched my child.”

Outside, engines approached.

Grant looked toward the windows.

Three black SUVs rolled up the circular drive, headlights cutting through the pale morning. Men and women in dark suits stepped out with the smooth precision of people who did not ask twice.

Daniel Cross entered first.

He had been my father’s attorney, then mine. Sixty-two, silver-haired, always dressed like court was in session. Behind him came two private security officers, a pediatric trauma nurse, and Agent Marcus Mercer, still wearing the same gray field coat he’d had on when I left the operation at dawn.

Mercer’s gaze took in the room once.

The champagne.

The robe.

The child in my arms.

The heel mark reddening across Lily’s small hand.

His face hardened.

“Evelyn,” he said quietly.

I nodded.

Grant recovered enough to straighten his coat. “This is private property. You can’t just barge in.”

Daniel looked at him with mild surprise. “Mr. Carlisle, as of six minutes ago, your access to this property was revoked.”

Vanessa laughed. “Revoked? He’s her husband.”

Daniel opened his leather folder. “He is the spouse of the sole titleholder. He owns no portion of this residence, the land beneath it, the vehicles garaged here, the staff contracts, the accounts funding his lifestyle, or the company offices he has occupied under provisional executive authority.”

Grant’s face went gray.

Vanessa’s eyes moved from Daniel to Grant.

“What does that mean?” she asked.

“It means,” Daniel said, “you are trespassing.”

The word hit her like a slap.

Grant turned on me. “You can’t do this.”

“I already did.”

Mercer stepped closer. “Mrs. Carlisle, may the nurse examine Lily?”

Lily clung to me.

I kept my voice soft. “Baby, this is Nurse Helen. She’s going to look at your hand, but I won’t put you down unless you want me to.”

The nurse approached slowly, crouching instead of standing over her. “Hi, Lily. I like your yellow pajamas.”

Lily did not answer, but she let the woman see her hand.

Her little fingers were swollen.

The nurse’s expression remained professional, but her eyes changed.

Mercer saw it.

So did I.

He turned to Grant. “Mr. Carlisle, I need you and Ms. Vale to remain in this room.”

Grant scoffed. “Am I under arrest?”

“Not yet,” Mercer said.

Vanessa grabbed Grant’s sleeve. “Grant, do something.”

But the power had already shifted. The room knew it. The house knew it. Even the air seemed to.

Daniel handed me a tablet. “You asked for the preliminary audit when you went dark. The flagged materials are here.”

Grant stared at the screen like it was a weapon.

May you like

It was.

I balanced Lily against one arm and looked down.
