Chapter 5 - THE BUSINESS BUILT FROM HER FEAR
The Braver Every Day platform suspended Todd’s account after receiving the warrant-preservation order.
The company did not delete the material.
It secured copies for investigators.
More than four thousand people had purchased or subscribed to some part of Todd’s parenting content.
Most had no knowledge that Avery was being coerced.
Several parents believed they were buying ordinary behavior-management lessons.
Others had questioned the harsh tone inside the private course and left.
One former subscriber preserved a live session in which Todd answered a question about fear exposure.
“What if the child begs you to stop?” a parent asked.
“Begging is often the final defense of manipulation,” Todd said. “Stopping teaches the child that panic controls adults.”
“Shouldn’t a clinician supervise?”
“Professionals are useful, but parents cannot outsource authority.”
The statement sounded confident.
It was not supported by any individualized treatment plan for Avery.
Todd had no license in psychology, counseling, medicine, or child development.
His degree was in digital marketing.
His parenting authority came from presenting himself as a calm father who had solved a difficult child.
Avery had been required to play the difficult child so the business could continue solving her.
Financial records showed that Braver Every Day earned nearly nine hundred thousand dollars over two years.
Not all income came from abusive content.
Todd sold planners, ordinary courses, and speaking appearances.
Investigators separated legitimate revenue from money directly connected to unlawfully recorded material.
Accuracy mattered.
Todd had used some business income for normal household expenses.
He used other funds for custody litigation, camera equipment, and payments to Brandon Pike.
Brandon initially claimed he believed the recordings involved actors.
Messages contradicted him.
BRANDON: Is Avery okay after these sessions?
TODD: She sleeps eventually.
BRANDON: What if she tells Melissa?
TODD: Melissa has no credibility left.
After Todd’s detention, Brandon remotely entered the server and attempted to delete the unedited archives.
The platform’s backup logs preserved the files.
He was arrested on obstruction and evidence-tampering charges.
He later began cooperating.
His testimony required corroboration.
He admitted editing out the snake and combining footage from different days to make Avery’s behavior appear connected to maternal visits.
“Why?” investigators asked.
“Todd paid me.”
“Did you believe Avery was in danger?”
“I thought he was too harsh.”
“That was not the question.”
Brandon lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why continue?”
“The course was our largest product.”
The investigators also reviewed Todd’s relationship with Dr. Benton.
No evidence showed the counselor knowingly participated.
Todd sent him edited clips and inaccurate summaries.
Dr. Benton acknowledged that he should have insisted on direct private interviews sooner.
He had spoken to Avery alone only once.
During that session, she said:
“Daddy helps me be brave.”
He asked what that meant.
She answered:
“I’m not supposed to tell.”
Todd later claimed Avery referred to a birthday surprise.
Dr. Benton documented the ambiguity but did not make a report.
After reviewing the full evidence, he said:
“I allowed the father’s confidence to interpret the child’s silence.”
The licensing board reviewed his conduct.
He was not criminally charged.
He completed mandatory corrective training and accepted professional monitoring.
Failures did not need to become conspiracies before they mattered.
Todd attempted to influence Avery from detention.
A letter addressed to Melissa contained a smaller note hidden beneath the envelope lining.
Avery,
Tell everyone Jasper climbed out by himself. Say you were confused because Mommy told you bad things about me. If you fix this, we can be a family again.
A detention mail officer discovered it.
The message violated the no-contact order and became evidence of witness tampering.
When Avery learned that Todd had written, she asked to read it.
Her therapist recommended waiting.
At first, Avery became angry.
“It’s mine.”
“It is about you,” Melissa explained. “But adults are checking whether reading it now would hurt you.”
“Everyone keeps deciding.”
Melissa sat beside her.
“You are right.”
“Then give it to me.”
“I will not hide that it exists. I am asking us to make the decision with your therapist tomorrow.”
Avery stared at her.
“Will you bring it?”
“Yes.”
Melissa arrived with the sealed copy.
After discussing the possible effects, Avery chose not to read it.
“Can I decide later?”
“Yes.”
