Chapter 25 - HELEN’S LAST CHRISTMAS

Helen lived to eighty-four.

Her last Christmas was at my house.

Not the old estate.

My house by then.

I eventually bought a larger place when Josephine was ten.

Still modest compared with Hale standards.

Four bedrooms.

Workshop garage.

Backyard.

Helen sat near our tree.

No gift hierarchy.

Everyone drew names with a $75 limit.

She complained.

“I cannot buy anything decent for seventy-five dollars.”

Josephine said:

“Skill issue.”

Helen laughed.

She gave Josephine a silver bracelet that belonged to her personally.

Worth more than limit.

Cheater.

Josephine accepted because sentimental inheritance was different.

Helen died the next spring.

Her estate was straightforward after years of professional management.

No hidden family structure.

She left me letters.

One said:

I spent too much of my life confusing Robert’s certainty with safety.

Another:

I knew Josephine’s gift was cruel before Robert pushed it toward her. I did not stop him because opposing him in public felt more dangerous to me than hurting a child quietly. I am ashamed of that calculation.

I kept it.

Josephine read it later.

No obligation to forgive the dead.

She did anyway, partly.

Her choice.
