Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE DOOR
Richard claimed the camera had been installed for security.
The invoice showed installation on December 22, two days before dinner.
The camera faced inward.
It captured the table, the head chair, and the path from the dining room to the front door. It did not cover the exterior entrance or any window.
Daniel had selected the position.
Detective Moreno obtained a preservation warrant for the recording service.
The footage began when I overturned the table.
The previous seven minutes were missing.
The provider’s logs showed someone manually deleted them at 8:41 p.m., twenty-three minutes after police arrived.
The deletion came from Daniel’s phone.
He said he had been trying to protect Lily’s privacy.
Moreno asked why he preserved the part showing my reaction.
Daniel’s attorney ended the interview.
A smaller hallway camera supplied indirect evidence. Its lens did not face the dining table, but a framed mirror reflected part of the room.
The image was imperfect.
It showed Richard standing behind Lily’s chair.
His arms moved.
The chair slid backward.
The reflection did not clearly show his hands gripping the wood.
It did show Lily seated when the chair moved.
Richard’s empty-chair story weakened.
The audio was more useful.
Richard’s voice boomed:
“That chair is not for a beggar.”
Then Lily’s head struck the table.
Daniel could be heard saying, “Dad,” but he did not approach until after I reached her.
The recording supported Lily’s account.
It did not prove the financial plan or why Richard targeted her.
The child-interview specialist asked Lily what happened before dinner.
She said Daniel told her to give Richard the handmade card only after sitting in the head chair.
“Why that chair?” the specialist asked.
“Daddy said Grandpa would know I belonged there.”
Daniel had directed her into the seat Richard guarded most obsessively.
When asked what was inside the card, Lily said she drew Hawthorne House and wrote:
Thank you for sharing Grandma Evelyn’s home with us.
Daniel had helped her spell Evelyn.
He knew the phrase would provoke Richard.
My stomach turned when Moreno explained it.
The confrontation had not arisen because Lily chose the wrong chair.
Daniel placed her there carrying a card that challenged Richard’s ownership.
He needed Richard angry.
He needed me to react.
The camera waited above the door.
Rachel still cautioned me against declaring the entire event staged.
“We have evidence of preparation and deleted footage. We do not yet know whether Daniel expected Richard to pull the chair.”
“He used our child.”
“Yes.”
The title company traced my electronic trustee resignation to an email created under my name.
The login came from the Hart Residential office.
Daniel and Margaret both had access that night.
The notary seal belonged to Cynthia Lee, who reported her stamp stolen from her car six months earlier.
Hart Residential’s parking garage camera showed Margaret beside Cynthia’s car on the day of the theft.
The image did not show her taking anything.
Then Cynthia located an old text from Margaret.
It read:
May you like
I found something you dropped. I’ll keep it safe.
Margaret had possessed the stolen seal before my forged resignation existed.
