Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO WATCHED FROM ACROSS THE STREET

Margaret Ellis’s statement described Olivia standing across from the Queens apartment where Celeste and I first lived.
Olivia remained there for twenty minutes.
She did not approach.
Three days later, Victor sent a letter threatening criminal charges if Celeste contacted Julian.
Celeste moved again.
The statement included the apartment address, dates, and a license plate belonging to Victor’s firm.
Archived toll records no longer existed.
Old photographs did.
A neighbor had photographed a street festival that week. In the background, Olivia stood beside Victor’s car.
The image was grainy but consistent with her appearance.
It did not prove every word Margaret wrote.
It corroborated location.
Olivia’s lawyer claimed she followed Celeste out of concern and lost contact afterward.
Then Vanessa requested a meeting.
She wanted immunity from civil claims and consideration in any criminal investigation.
Rebecca refused to promise either.
Detective Ortiz arranged a proffer with prosecutors present.
Vanessa admitted the affair began nine months earlier.
Richard told her the marriage was over but that Maya might soon receive “family money.”
Olivia instructed Vanessa to film arguments, save embarrassing moments, and encourage Richard to provoke me near Lily.
“Why did you agree?” I asked through Rebecca.
Vanessa looked down.
“I wanted Richard.”
“That is not an explanation.”
“No. It’s the reason.”
She admitted creating the edit template before the birthday.
She admitted deleting the assault from the public upload.
She admitted captioning me as a drama queen.
She denied knowing Richard would force my face into the cake.
The original messages supported part of her claim.
Olivia said:
Keep the camera high. We need her hands and Lily’s reaction.
Richard replied:
I’ll make sure she gives us something.
Vanessa had not known the precise act.
She knew they planned humiliation.
She preserved another message because it frightened her.
Olivia:
The ring has to appear naturally. Tear the neckline if you need to.
Vanessa:
Why?
Olivia:
Because Julian cannot help himself once he sees it.
The party had been designed not only to provoke me.
Olivia expected Julian Sterling to attend.
She knew one of Richard’s clients would bring him.
She wanted the ring revealed in front of him.
“Why?” Rebecca asked.
Vanessa answered.
“To force the claim into public before Maya could get legal advice. Olivia said public scandal would make the Sterling board treat Maya as a threat.”
Olivia wanted Julian to recognize me under the worst possible circumstances.
A humiliated waitress.
A crying child.
An edited video portraying instability.
Richard did not understand the entire strategy.
He understood enough to cooperate.
Vanessa’s most damaging admission concerned the beginning of my marriage.
Olivia had shown her a photograph of my mother and me taken outside a grocery store when I was sixteen.
“She kept it in a folder labeled MAYA.”
“Why did she have it?”
“She said she had been tracking you for years.”
Richard entered my life when I was twenty-six.
He came to the Harbor Lantern repeatedly until I agreed to coffee.
I had believed persistence meant devotion.
Vanessa said Olivia selected the restaurant.
Richard’s background account paid for the first investigation.

My husband had not happened to meet me.
His mother had placed him in my path.
