Chapter 7 - THE PAPERS WAITING AT DINNER
Daniel denied driving the company car.
Vehicle logs showed his access card opened it.
He had lent the card to Richard’s assistant months earlier and never reported it.
Another unguarded door.
Under threat of losing his position, the assistant admitted Richard ordered her to collect Ruth’s box and remove papers from the study before the fire.
She denied starting it.
Her statement placed Richard’s plan closer to obstruction.
Daniel finally told me why the family needed my signature.
The lender had discovered the older trust in the title chain.
A new loan required acknowledgment from anyone representing a possible minor beneficiary.
“Why Lily?”
“I don’t know the exact terms.”
“Yet you approved the filing under her name.”
“Dad said it was technical.”
“What was waiting after dinner?”
“A guardian consent.”
I stared at him.
“You planned to ask me after your father insulted our daughter?”
“I didn’t know he would touch her.”
“But you knew he would pressure me.”
Daniel looked down.
Richard had told him I would sign once I understood the company could fail.
When I refused, they intended to delay my departure until the mobile notary arrived.
The table flip destroyed that plan.
The lender supplied the application.
It claimed the guardian consent had been “verbally confirmed” by me.
Daniel signed beneath that statement.
The 1.4-million-dollar loan was already in default.
If the forged deed failed, the lender would fight to preserve its lien.
If it succeeded, Richard could refinance again.
Either way, Lily’s hidden interest stood between him and more money.
Then Ruth remembered Evelyn’s bank.
She had once accompanied her to a safe-deposit appointment.
