Chapter 25 - NOAH BECOMES A FATHER

Noah became a pediatric emergency physician.

Lily became an award-winning documentary producer.

Not famous celebrity.

Good at her work.

Noah married Rachel Kim.

At thirty-five, they had a daughter.

Sophie Walker.

Girl.

When Noah announced it, Lily sent the family group chat:

TRAGIC. NO MALE HEIR.

Noah replied:

FORTY-SIX PERCENT CANCELLED.

I stared at the messages.

Then laughed until I cried.

Humor is safe when the power is gone.

Sophie was born in the same hospital system.

Not the same room.

Noah asked whether QuietCare existed.

The nurse smiled.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Do you think I’m going to be kidnapped by your grandparents?”

“My grandparents are dead.”

“Then relax.”

He did.

Mostly.

When Rachel handed Sophie to me, I asked:

“May I?”

She laughed.

“You’re her grandmother.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Her expression softened.

“Yes.”

I held her.

Newborn smell.

Tiny face.

Nothing like Noah and everything like him.

The old hospital room flashed through my mind.

Mark.

Richard.

My incision.

The door.

Then passed.

Rachel said:

“I’m hungry.”

Noah stood.

“What do you want?”

“Burger.”

“Hospital has soup.”

“I did not ask what hospital has.”

He saluted.

“Yes, ma’am.”

I smiled.

Postpartum woman requests food.

Gets food.

No one makes it symbolic.

Later Rachel wanted sleep.

Noah took Sophie.

No one said a good mother should keep the baby.

No one said boys belong somewhere else.

No one closed the door against her will.

The ordinary scene felt enormous only because I knew what ordinary costs when families refuse it.

Lily arrived with flowers.

Then looked at Sophie.

“Noah.”

“What?”

“She’s first live issue.”

He threw a pillow at her.

Rachel said:

“I don’t understand your family.”

“Healthy.”

We all laughed.

The past had become language we could control.

Not language controlling us.
