Chapter 24 - THE OLD KENNEL SITE

The Harrington estate had become a public botanical park after the developer sold part of the land to the county.

The original house was gone.

The kennel area became a rain garden designed to capture storm runoff.

Emma discovered that accidentally while reviewing a project map.

“Do you want to go?” I asked.

“Yes.”

I expected dread.

She brought a notebook.

At the site, wild grasses grew where the kennel had stood.

A shallow basin filled during storms.

Children followed stepping stones across it.

No plaque described what happened.

Good.

The land did not owe strangers our trauma.

Emma crouched near the drainage edge.

“The slope is wrong.”

I laughed.

“What?”

“Water will pond too long after heavy storms.”

“You came here to inspect?”

“I’m an engineer’s daughter.”

“Designer.”

“Better than engineer.”

We argued about drainage for twenty minutes.

Then she stood where the chain post had been according to old property photographs.

“Do you remember exactly?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“I don’t.”

“That’s okay.”

“I remember cold. And your shirt.”

“What about it?”

“You smelled like rain and metal.”

Bolt cutters.

My hands shook slightly.

Emma noticed.

“Dad?”

“I’m okay.”

“Do you want to leave?”

Not:

Are you fine?

A real question.

“Yes.”

We left.

No ritual.

No digging.

May you like

No chain buried under flowers.

A place changed because time and new use changed it.
