Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO SHE WANTED

The judge denied Patricia’s request.
She had no legal right to prevent Michael and Ethan from receiving their own test result.
Still, the report remained sealed from the public because Ethan was a minor.
Michael, Maya Lawson—my newly retained attorney—and I met inside Robert’s conference room.
Robert placed the unopened envelope on the table.
Michael did not touch it.
“You asked for the test,” I said.
“I know.”
“Then open it.”
“What if—”
“Do not ask me to comfort you through a doubt your mother created.”
His eyes filled with shame.
He opened the envelope.
I watched his face.
First confusion.
Then relief.
Then something heavier.
“The laboratory says the result supports paternity,” he whispered.
“How strongly?”
Robert read the probability.
Greater than 99.99 percent.
Michael was Ethan’s biological father.
He covered his mouth with both hands.
I expected relief to fill me.
Instead, anger arrived.
“You knew yesterday?”
Robert shook his head.
“The report came this morning.”
“Then why did Patricia’s test exclude Ethan from Charles?”
“No interpretation yet.”
Robert gathered the papers quickly.
“We still need the full lab file.”
He was hiding something.
The central secret remained behind his restraint.
Michael wanted to tell Ethan immediately.
Maya recommended using simple language.
“The result proves Michael is his biological father,” she said. “It does not resolve why his grandmother made the accusation.”
Ethan sat between us on the sofa that evening.
Michael told him the doctors had checked.
“I’m your dad,” he said.
Ethan looked at me.
“Was he maybe not?”
“No,” I answered. “He has always been your father. Grandma used a confusing paper to hurt us.”
“Why?”
“We are still finding out.”
Ethan touched Michael’s wedding ring.
“Did you believe her?”
Michael began crying.
“For a little while, I became afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Never of you.”
“You didn’t say anything when she gave me trash.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I was weak.”
A five-year-old should not have needed that confession.
He climbed into my lap instead of Michael’s.
The birthday video continued spreading.
Patricia’s edited clip reached national gossip sites because the Reynolds company was well known locally.
Maya released no footage of Ethan.
She issued a narrow statement:
An independent court-supervised test confirms Michael Reynolds is Ethan’s biological father. Further claims involving the child remain under seal.
Patricia responded that paternity did not prove “legitimate Reynolds descent.”
That phrase confused the public and frightened the company board.
If Michael was Ethan’s biological father but Ethan did not descend from Charles, the question moved one generation backward.
Michael did not yet understand.
Robert did.
He began searching old files from the year Michael was born.
Before he left his office, I followed him into the records room.
“You knew Charles before Michael’s birth.”
“Yes.”
“You reacted to the second page before any independent test.”
“Yes.”
“Tell me why.”
“I need evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
He removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
“A mistake that lasted thirty-five years.”
At home, Detective Ellis showed me Patricia’s planning document.
One line appeared beneath “attacks Patricia”:
Robert will intervene if he sees Page Two. Keep him away from the envelope.
May you like
Patricia had invited Robert because she expected his silence.
She had also feared what he would recognize.
