Chapter 7 - THE STORY ANDREW FILED
Andrew amended his divorce petition.
He alleged that I had known about the promissory note for years and timed our departure to seize control during his promotion.
He described the spaghetti incident as provocation by me.
According to his filing, I encouraged Chloe to approach Patricia while carrying an overloaded bowl, then exaggerated an accidental spill.
The full video made the claim absurd.
His attorneys still filed it.
Legal documents can contain weak arguments when the purpose is delay, expense, or pressure.
Andrew also requested access to the girls’ trust information.
Rachel argued that no trust had yet been verified.
The handwritten CFO note was evidence, not final proof.
The sealed package remained unopened.
Westbridge’s records suggested a beneficiary memorandum existed.
Until the court authorized release, we did not know its exact terms.
I began noticing how uncertainty tempted everyone.
Patricia assumed she knew the document.
Andrew knew part.
Daniel knew financial consequences.
Rachel knew structure.
I knew almost nothing.
Yet reporters called me “the controlling beneficiary’s mother.”
Power arrived in headlines before law established it.
That attention threatened the girls.
Photographers waited outside school.
One shouted:
“Sophia, do you own your father’s company?”
She cried in the car.
I requested remote learning temporarily.
The school offered secured entry instead.
Removing the girls from routine might reinforce fear.
We chose the secured entrance.
Sophia entered holding Chloe’s hand.
Neither looked at the cameras.
Andrew’s supervised visit took place at a family center.
He brought gifts.
The supervisor asked him to put them aside until the girls decided whether to accept them.
Chloe asked:
“Did you know Grandma would pour dinner?”
“No.”
“Did you think it was funny?”
“No.”
“Why didn’t you help me?”
Andrew’s answer lasted too long.
He said he was shocked.
He said the room was full of investors.
He said any reaction could have damaged the acquisition.
He said he thought I had the situation under control.
Sophia interrupted.
“You wanted to enjoy your celebration.”
Andrew closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission was small and devastating.
He chose the company moment over his child’s humiliation.
After the visit, he requested unsupervised contact.
The evaluator denied it for now because he continued minimizing Patricia’s behavior and had involved the children in succession documents.
Andrew accused me of poisoning them against him.
He had begun using Madeline-like language.
Daughters became witnesses only when their words harmed the wrong person.
Daniel Mercer did not return home after the café meeting.
His wife reported him missing.
Police found his car at the airport.
No ticket had been purchased.
His company access had been terminated by Patricia at 3:12 p.m.
The reason:
MISUSE OF CONFIDENTIAL SUCCESSION DATA.
Security footage showed Daniel entering a Vance Hospitality service vehicle with Andrew.
Andrew told police Daniel asked for a ride.
The vehicle arrived at headquarters.
Daniel never appeared on the exit cameras.
When investigators searched his office, they found the final Bellmont closing binder.
A page had been torn out.
In the wastebasket lay a note in Daniel’s handwriting:
LAUREN DOESN’T KNOW THE DEBT CAME FROM HER FATHER.
