Chapter 18 - CECILY REVOKES MORE THAN A POWER
Cecily changed practical systems.
Not estate.
Systems.
Marietta lost:
Online banking access.
Bill-pay authority.
Access to Cecily’s mail.
Gift purchasing.
Medical portal proxy.
Not as punishment.
Because trust had broken.
Cecily hired:
Bookkeeper twice monthly.
Ride service for appointments.
Independent CPA for annual gifting.
Costs money.
Fine.
Independence costs less than family control sometimes.
Then Cecily called me.
“I feel ridiculous paying strangers for things my daughter did for free.”
“Free?”
She laughed sadly.
“Fair.”
Marietta’s help had emotional cost.
Then Cecily made another change.
No more annual “equal granddaughter” visible gifts.
She still contributed to both education accounts directly.
No intermediary.
Amounts private.
No children comparing.
Birthday gifts personal and modest.
Why?
Because equality had become theater.
Then:
“Do you want to know what I’m leaving you?”
“No.”
She stared.
“Really?”
“No.”
That surprised both of us.
Then:
“What if I leave everything to Marietta?”
“I’d be upset.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m human.”
She smiled.
Then:
“But it is yours.”
This was new.
Then Cecily asked:
“What about Aubrielle?”
“She is not entitled to your estate.”
My chest hurt saying it.
Because part of me wanted guarantee.
But true.
“If you choose to include her, do it because you want to. Do not use it to prove she is family.”
Cecily nodded.
Then:
“She is family.”
“Yes.”
No money required.
That was exactly the lesson.
Then Marietta learned about the system changes and accused me of “isolating” Cecily.
I had not arranged them.
Cecily’s attorney did.
She was competent.
No guardianship.
No undue influence evidence.
Still, Marietta filed a request for independent capacity evaluation? Not justified. Her lawyer discouraged and she withdrew.
Good.
No abusing elder-law systems just because mother changed access.
Then Cecily’s doctor documented ordinary competence after surgery.
No cognitive concern.
That closed that angle.
Then Marietta shifted again.
“If Mom was competent, her real texts prove she shared my view.”
