Chapter 14 - THE MENTOR
Helen Marsh denied helping Robert.
She admitted speaking with a man who identified himself as Michael Reed.
“He said he had evidence that the fire investigation was corrupt,” she told the outside investigators. “I asked him to come in.”
“Did you notify anyone?”
“I notified my division chief.”
The division chief at the time had retired.
His old calendar showed a meeting with Robert Hutchinson two days after Helen’s call.
Helen claimed she did not know about that meeting.
Archived access logs showed someone using her credentials opened Michael’s death file, the Mateo Ruiz prosecution, and the dental identification records within the same week.
Helen said several assistants knew her password because the office’s old system frequently locked users out.
Shared credentials again.
Convenience again.
No immediate arrest followed.
Investigators seized work devices under lawful authority, interviewed former staff, and examined financial records. A payment from North Coast Safety Review had entered an account belonging to Helen’s late husband.
She said it was consulting income unrelated to the fire.
Documentation would determine whether that explanation survived.
Michael finally contacted Bennett directly.
He called through an attorney in Montreal.
He was willing to return to the United States under negotiated security arrangements, but he wanted confirmation that neither Robert nor anyone connected to the old prosecutor’s office would learn his travel schedule.
The government made no promise of immunity.
Michael could face questions about using false identification, insurance proceeds, his disappearance, and withholding evidence.
His attorney understood.
A meeting was arranged at a federal facility.
Before it occurred, Robert violated electronic monitoring.
His ankle device transmitted a tamper alert from the garage of my parents’ house. Officers arrived to find the strap cut and the garage empty.
Diane was inside the kitchen with bruising on her wrist.
She said Robert forced her to unlock a floor safe, removed cash and passports, then left through a neighbor’s yard.
A statewide alert followed.
Robert’s attorney said he did not know his client’s location.
Travis remained in custody and denied helping.
Vanessa, now under tighter monitoring, provided a possible destination.
Our family owned an old hunting cabin under a company name not used for years.
Tactical officers found the cabin empty.
On the table lay the original packet Michael had given Diane.
Robert had opened it but left most documents behind.
The list of public officials was missing.
So was the photograph of Paul Harker.
One item remained.
A handwritten confession from Daniel Ruiz dated the week before the fire.
It stated that Robert ordered the safety systems disabled and that Travis moved hazardous materials into Building C.
Daniel wrote:
If I die, Michael Reed has copies. Rebecca Hutchinson does not know what her family is doing. Do not use her signature to protect them.
A dead man had defended me more honestly than I had examined myself.
The packet also contained a photograph of Michael, Daniel, and another person standing beside the chained fire doors.
The third person was Helen Marsh.
The photograph had been taken before she joined the prosecutor’s office.
On the back, Daniel had written:
HELEN KNOWS WHO OWNS NORTH COAST.
Hours later, Helen failed to appear for an interview.
Her car was found at the airport.
