Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA LORRAINE INSTALLED HERSELF

Lorraine denied everything.

She told police Megan had fallen repeatedly because she refused to follow medical advice.

She said the bruises came from anemia.

She claimed she visited only twice and never touched her.

Then investigators checked the building cameras.

Our landlord had installed a camera above the main entrance after package thefts.

The footage showed Lorraine entering the building nine times during the previous two weeks.

She always arrived after I left.

She always departed before I returned.

Her attorney argued that visiting a pregnant daughter-in-law was not evidence of assault.

That was true.

Then police examined the nursery monitor.

Lorraine had purchased it as a baby-shower gift.

She insisted on installing the system herself because she said I would “mess up the security settings.”

The camera stored motion events on a cloud account she created.

Megan and I could view the live image through an application, but Lorraine remained the account administrator.

She intended to use the camera to prove Megan slept during the day and neglected the home.

Instead, it preserved what my mother did when she believed no one else could see.

The camera faced the crib and part of the bed.

The worst violence occurred below the frame.

The audio was clear.

In one clip, Megan said:

“Give me my phone.”

Lorraine answered:

“When you learn to speak respectfully.”

“I need a doctor.”

“You need to stop performing.”

“My ankle is swelling.”

“Then stay in bed.”

Another clip captured a hard impact.

Megan cried out.

Lorraine said:

“That one will not show beneath your dress.”

A third recording contained my mother’s motive.

LORRAINE: Where are the Lakefront statements?

MEGAN: Somewhere you cannot reach.

LORRAINE: You approved those invoices.

MEGAN: You used my account.

LORRAINE: Prove it.

MEGAN: I will.

LORRAINE: Jake already thinks you’re unstable.

MEGAN: Because you keep telling him that.

LORRAINE: Because he believes his mother.

Silence followed.

Then Megan said:

“He will believe the injuries.”

Lorraine laughed softly.

“Not after you’ve hidden them for weeks.”

The recording ended with the bedroom door closing.

The cloud system showed Lorraine later attempted to delete the clips.

She removed them from the visible timeline.

The provider retained deleted data for thirty days.

Investigators preserved everything through a warrant.

Another device supplied video.

The bakery downstairs had a rear camera facing the shared courtyard.

It showed Lorraine dragging the wooden carpet tool from her trunk.

Two hours later, she returned without it.

Police found the dowel inside the hardware store’s locked storage room.

Fibers from Megan’s blue blanket clung to one rough edge.

The object also carried traces of skin too limited for individual identification.

The audio, bruising pattern, and Lorraine’s possession created the connection.

My mother continued saying pregnancy caused the marks.

Dr. Elena Ruiz, Megan’s obstetrician, reviewed the injuries.

“Pregnancy may increase bruising in some patients,” she explained. “It does not produce repeated linear contusions, shoe-pattern trauma, or a healing fracture.”

Our baby remained stable, but Megan had lost weight and showed signs of sustained stress.

The placenta appeared healthy.

No evidence showed Lorraine directly injured the fetus.

Accuracy mattered.

My mother’s conduct was already serious without inventing harm the examinations did not find.

Megan remained in the hospital for four days.

She received a brace, pain management appropriate for pregnancy, nutritional support, and physical therapy planning.

A domestic-violence advocate helped her obtain an emergency protective order.

The order barred Lorraine from the apartment, hospital, hardware store records, and direct contact with Megan.

I asked whether I should be named too.

Megan looked at me for a long time.

“You did not hit me.”

“I brought her accusations home.”

“Yes.”

“I did not know.”

“You did not ask in a way that made it safe to answer.”

The sentence hurt because it was accurate.

“Do you want me to leave?”

“For now.”

I moved into a motel near the hospital.

Not as punishment imposed by a judge.

Because my wife needed one place where she was not responsible for my guilt.

I attended every medical update only when she invited me.

I did not ask her to forgive me.

I did not tell her that my mother had manipulated us both as though our injuries were equal.

Lorraine deceived me.

She terrorized Megan.

Those statements could exist together without becoming the same experience.

Police searched my mother’s house and the hardware store office.

They recovered printed copies of the fake child-welfare complaint, forged emails, payment approvals, and photographs of Megan sleeping.

Lorraine had labeled one folder:

INCAPACITY / CUSTODY.

Inside was a petition asking a court to place our unborn child temporarily with her after delivery.

It claimed Megan had severe prenatal depression, self-inflicted injuries, and financial delusions.

I was described as too overworked and emotionally dependent to protect the baby.

My mother had not only planned to discredit my wife.

She had planned to take our child after turning us against each other.
