CHAP 4 — Celeste’s Rules

Celeste did not panic the way ordinary people panic.
She reorganized.
Her eyes moved across the room, counting risks.
Adrian pinned.
Whip visible.
Rulebook open.
Lawyers present.
Phone recording.
My calm face.
Sirens outside.
Then she chose her angle.
“This woman attacked my son,” Celeste said to the lawyers. “You witnessed the aftermath.”
One lawyer, a thin man with silver glasses, said nothing.
The other swallowed.
I laughed once.
“Careful. Your billing rate doesn’t include perjury.”
Celeste’s gaze snapped to me.
“You have no idea what you are challenging.”
“I know exactly what I’m challenging.”
I nodded toward the rulebook.
“Page one is coercive control. Page two is financial exploitation. The whip is assault. The phone recording proves premeditation because Adrian set it up before he threatened me. My necklace has streamed everything to a federal prosecutor since the moment we entered this room.”
The thin lawyer went very still.
Celeste’s face tightened.
“Rebecca Sloan,” I said. “You may know the name soon.”
Adrian cursed under his breath.
Celeste looked down at him.
“Be quiet.”
There it was.
A crack in their perfect family unity.
Adrian was not her son in that moment.
He was liability.
I picked up the rulebook and held it where the lawyers could see.
“Did you write this one yourself, Adrian? Or did your mother update Claire’s version?”
Celeste went pale by a fraction.
The first real fear.
“Claire was sick,” she said.
“No,” I replied. “Claire was trapped.”
The elevator chimed again, but the doors did not open. Someone had arrived downstairs and security had locked the private access.
My phone vibrated on the floor.
Rebecca.
I answered on speaker without releasing Adrian.
“Maya,” Rebecca said, calm and sharp. “Police are in the lobby. Private security has given them access. Do not move toward the weapon. Do not let anyone leave.”
Celeste’s eyes flashed.
“You brought police into my son’s home?”
I looked around the penthouse.
The lilies.
The whip.
The rulebook.
The annulment petition.
“Your son turned his home into a crime scene.”
Adrian twisted his head.
“This is insane. She’s insane. She planned this with Claire.”
Rebecca’s voice came through the speaker.
“Adrian Cole, this call is being recorded. You should stop speaking until you have criminal counsel.”
The lawyers behind Celeste both reacted at once.
Criminal counsel.
Not family counsel.
Not corporate.
Criminal.
That word changed the temperature of the room.
Celeste took one step back.
“You cannot prove anything from years ago.”
“Claire can,” I said. “And so can the cloud records Adrian forgot existed.”
Adrian stopped breathing for half a second.
He knew then.
Not everything.
But enough.
Claire had not vanished because she was unstable.
She had survived because she had been smart enough to save evidence and quiet enough to stay alive until someone else connected the pattern.
Celeste turned toward the elevator.
Leaving.
I raised my voice.
“Celeste.”
She stopped.
“You once told me marriage into your family required obedience disguised as grace.”
Her shoulders stiffened.
“I remembered that.”
I looked down at Adrian.
“So tonight, I chose discipline disguised as a wedding dress.”
The sirens were directly beneath the building now.
Red and blue light moved across the penthouse ceiling.
Adrian finally whispered, “Mother.”
Celeste did not look at him.
That told me all I needed to know about the Cole family.
