CHAP 5 — I Owned Your Empire

I returned to the mansion in the same ruined clothes.

Arthur wanted me in a coat.

The doctor wanted me in bed.

My father wanted Nathan brought to me in handcuffs.

I refused all of them.

There are moments when dignity does not look clean.

Sometimes dignity looks like blood on a collar, torn fabric, and a woman walking back into the room where they left her broken.

Two Kingsley security vehicles entered through the gates first. Behind them came black SUVs carrying corporate enforcement officers, federal agents, forensic accountants, and a locksmith authorized by the foreclosure court order Arthur had obtained faster than most people could schedule breakfast.

The mansion doors opened before we reached them.

One of Nathan’s guards stood there.

The same guard who had hesitated before obeying the rib order.

He looked at me and lowered his eyes.

“Mrs. Crane—”

“Do not call me that.”

He stepped aside.

The foyer smelled faintly of bleach.

They had tried to clean the blood.

Not well enough.

Nathan stood overhead on the glass-railed balcony with Vanessa beside him. Patricia hovered near the stairs, dressed for battle in cream silk and diamonds.

When Nathan saw me, fury replaced panic because fury was easier for him.

“Take your check and get out of my sight, Claire!”

His voice echoed through the foyer.

The torn pieces of the check were still in my pocket.

I pulled them out and let them fall onto the dark stone floor.

“I already threw away your tip.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

Nathan gripped the balcony rail.

“You think this is funny? You send strangers to freeze my accounts and now you crawl back here?”

“I didn’t crawl.”

My father entered behind me.

Nathan looked at him, annoyed first, then confused.

August Kingsley was not famous in the way Nathan understood fame. But Patricia recognized Arthur.

Her face changed.

That was the first satisfying moment.

Patricia whispered, “Arthur Vale.”

Nathan glanced at her.

“What?”

Arthur stepped forward and opened a leather folder.

“Nathaniel Crane, as of 8:03 this morning, Kingsley Meridian Holdings has executed emergency liquidation authority over Crane Development and all subsidiary structures under default provision seventeen.”

Nathan laughed.

It sounded thin.

“You can’t liquidate my company.”

Arthur looked at him with mild disgust.

“It was never fully yours.”

Vanessa grabbed Nathan’s arm.

“Nathan?”

His phone chimed again.

Then Patricia’s.

Then Vanessa’s.

A cascade of red alerts lit their screens.

Account Restricted.

Asset Freeze.

Board Authority Revoked.

Property Foreclosure Executed.

The front doors opened behind me.

Uniformed corporate enforcers and federal agents entered with the calm force of people who did not need permission.

One enforcer strode up the stairs and handed Nathan a packet.

“Nathan Crane, your assets are frozen. Vacate the property immediately.”

Nathan stared at the papers.

“This is my home.”

“No,” Arthur said. “This property is collateral on defaulted instruments now controlled by Kingsley Meridian.”

Patricia turned to me slowly.

Her face twisted with horror.

“Who are you?”

I looked up at her.

“Charlotte Elise Kingsley.”

The foyer became silent.

Vanessa whispered, “No.”

Nathan’s eyes moved from me to my father.

Then to Arthur.

Then back to me.

“You told me your name was Claire Bennett.”

“You told me you loved me.”

His face flushed.

“You lied.”

“Yes,” I said. “To see whether someone could love me without my father’s money.”

He stepped down one stair.

“You trapped me.”

I almost laughed, but my ribs refused.

“Nathan, I funded your survival, slept beside your arrogance, endured your mother’s contempt, and watched your mistress sit at my table. If this was a trap, you built it around yourself.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“She’s lying. Nathan, she has to be lying.”

Arthur turned to her.

“Vanessa Monroe, the condo purchased through Crane vendor account 1187 has been seized. The vehicle, jewelry purchases, and personal transfers are under review as misappropriated corporate funds.”

Vanessa clutched her belly.

“You can’t take things from a pregnant woman.”

My father spoke for the first time.

“We are taking stolen things from a thief. Your pregnancy is irrelevant to ownership.”

Nathan suddenly understood the size of the room closing around him.

His rage vanished.

“Claire,” he said softly.

I hated that voice.

The one he used when he wanted to become human again.

“Don’t.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You made eight.”

He looked at my ribs.

Maybe he finally saw them.

Or maybe he saw the charges attached to them.

The federal agent stepped forward.

“Nathan Crane, we need you to come with us regarding assault, conspiracy, financial fraud, and evidence tampering.”

Patricia shouted, “This is outrageous!”

Arthur handed her a second notice.

“Patricia Crane, your personal accounts tied to Crane Development transfers are frozen pending forensic review.”

Her knees almost buckled.

The woman who called me cheap stared at a piece of paper that made her poorer with every line.

Nathan looked down at me.

For the first time in our marriage, he was afraid of me.

I held his gaze.

May you like

“I owned your entire empire, Nathan.”

Then the handcuffs closed.
