Chapter 4 - THE PEOPLE WHO DELETED

The first attempt to destroy evidence happened at 9:03 p.m.

Raúl entered my parents’ house after police released the scene.

He told the officer guarding the kitchen that he needed medication from an upstairs bathroom.

Instead, security footage showed him unplugging the home-camera hub.

He removed a memory card and placed it inside his pocket.

The system had already uploaded motion clips to cloud storage.

The removal changed nothing except his legal position.

Police recovered the card from his truck.

It contained earlier footage of Ernesto practicing with the belt in the kitchen.

Not striking anyone.

Swinging it through the air while joking with Raúl about making children stand straighter.

The footage was from the morning of the party.

Raúl’s voice could be heard saying:

“Lucía will lose her mind if you touch Camila.”

Ernesto answered:

“Then she should control her.”

Raúl knew the risk before the guests arrived.

He did not warn me.

He laughed.

Maribel attempted the second deletion.

She sent messages to relatives asking them to erase videos because “Camila deserves privacy.”

When one cousin refused, Maribel replied:

If Dad is arrested, everybody who shared footage will be responsible for killing him.

Detective Morales obtained the messages after the cousin turned over her phone.

Socorro organized witness statements.

She created a group chat called FAMILY TRUTH.

The title alone revealed her method.

Inside, she wrote:

We all saw Camila running.

Ernesto never touched her.

Lucía is emotional because of the blood.

Nobody should speak separately with police.

Several relatives agreed.

Others remained silent.

One responded:

That is not what I saw.

Socorro removed her from the group.

The family truth was not an account.

It was membership.

Agree and remain family.

Disagree and become the enemy.

I gave Detective Morales access to years of messages with my parents.

In one, Socorro complained that I refused to let Ernesto discipline Camila.

She wrote:

You make him look powerless in front of his own family.

I answered:

He has no authority to punish my child physically.

Her reply:

Then don’t bring her here if she cannot respect the head of the house.

The message was eighteen months old.

I had ignored the warning embedded inside it.

She told me the condition clearly.

Access to the family required accepting Ernesto’s authority over Camila’s body.

I continued attending while believing my stated boundary would hold.

Victor—no, Diego—sat beside me as I read the exchange again.

“You told her no.”

“I still went back.”

“You believed she would honor it.”

“I knew who she was.”

“Knowing a pattern is not the same as expecting this result.”

I looked through the ICU glass.

Camila slept with one hand curled beside her face.

“She asked to leave before the cake.”

Diego did not tell me to stop blaming myself.

Instead, he said:

“Then we learn from that.”

The sentence hurt.

It also respected reality.

Guilt becomes useful only when it changes future choices.

Otherwise, it is another form of self-absorption.

My responsibility was not to suffer more than Ernesto.

It was to ensure Camila never again entered a room where adults expected her to manage his anger.

The district attorney charged Ernesto with injury to a child, aggravated assault involving a belt, and reckless conduct leading to serious bodily injury.

Additional charges were considered based on the fall and concealment.

Socorro faced allegations of witness tampering, child endangerment, and obstruction.

Raúl faced evidence-tampering charges.

Maribel faced witness-influencing charges.

My family told relatives I had sent everyone toward jail over a soda.

The soda had become their preferred object because it made the conflict appear small.

They never said:

A grown man struck a toddler with a belt.

A grandmother encouraged the punishment.

The child fell and fractured her skull.

The family coached witnesses and removed evidence.

They said:

All this over a soda.

Language was the first place they hid.

Evidence kept pulling them back out.
