Chapter 3 - WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE I ARRIVED

The police recovered security footage from the Mercer home.

Linda attempted to erase it after officers entered.

The system retained encrypted off-site backups for seventy-two hours.

Investigators obtained them before the deletion window closed.

The recording began at 4:08 p.m.

Emily arrived carrying a lemon pie.

Linda kissed her cheek.

Ryan took her coat.

Children from the extended family were present then, hunting plastic eggs through the downstairs rooms.

At 5:10, the children and several relatives left for a neighborhood event.

Linda told them Emily had a migraine and needed quiet.

She had not.

At 5:18, Charles closed the driveway gate through the control panel.

At 5:21, Linda disabled Emily’s guest access to the front door.

At 5:24, Ryan placed the blue folder on the dining table.

The first document stated that Emily had exceeded her authority while reviewing Open Table records.

The second said Susan knowingly guaranteed Mercer Development’s debt.

The third required Emily, as family representative, to ratify that guarantee.

The fourth released the Mercers from claims involving Haven Row.

The fifth resigned Emily from the foundation board.

The sixth transferred Susan’s remaining founder voting rights into a committee chaired by Linda.

The seventh authorized a confidential settlement paying Mercer Development another $600,000.

The documents would not have survived careful legal review.

They did not need to.

The Mercers wanted Emily’s signature before Open Table’s emergency board meeting on Monday.

A signed ratification from Susan’s daughter could delay fraud allegations, confuse insurers, and pressure other trustees into settlement.

Emily refused.

Ryan kept his voice calm at first.

“You are protecting your mother’s legacy.”

“No. I’m validating a forged guarantee.”

“The foundation benefited from our property.”

“There is no housing project.”

“The project was delayed.”

“There was never a permit.”

Linda placed one hand on Emily’s shoulder.

“Susan understood how business works.”

“My mother would not pledge a food-security endowment for your private loan.”

Charles poured lemon water from a glass pitcher.

“Everyone is emotional. Drink.”

Emily moved the glass away.

“I’m leaving.”

Ryan stood between her and the foyer.

“Not until we finish.”

“Move.”

“Stop making this ugly.”

“It became ugly before I arrived.”

She reached for the front door.

The handle flashed red.

Linda watched from the dining-room entrance.

“You are not leaving while carrying stolen documents.”

“I downloaded records I was authorized to review.”

“You copied family information.”

“Foundation money is not family money.”

That sentence changed Linda’s face.

She stepped toward Emily.

“Everything your mother built depended on people like us.”

“My mother built it because people like you treated charity as branding.”

Linda slapped her.

Emily staggered into the table.

The pie fell and shattered across the floor.

Ryan grabbed her arms.

“Apologize.”

“For what?”

“Insulting my mother.”

“Let go.”

Charles remained near the bar.

“This is escalating because no one is managing her anxiety.”

“I am not anxious. I am being held.”

Linda picked up the lemon water.

“Drink and calm down.”

Emily turned her head.

Charles opened his medical case and removed a small vial.

The camera angle did not show the label clearly.

Audio captured the cap opening.

Emily saw him pour liquid into the pitcher.

“What was that?”

“A medication to stop the panic.”

“I said I don’t want it.”

Ryan held both wrists.

Charles lifted the glass.

Emily kicked the table and broke free.

The water spilled across her dress.

Some entered her mouth.

She coughed and moved toward the living room.

Ryan followed.

The first physical blow came after Emily reached for her phone.

Ryan struck her across the cheek.

He later called it an attempt to stop her from falling.

The video showed an open hand.

Linda picked up the phone first.

Emily lunged for it.

Ryan seized the back of her dress and tore the collar.

She fell against the coffee table.

One ceramic rabbit broke beneath her elbow.

Charles said:

“Do not let her call anyone until the medication works.”

Emily crawled toward the phone.

Ryan kicked it farther away.

Linda stood over her.

“You have embarrassed this family for the last time.”

Emily looked up.

“You stole from hungry children.”

Linda raised her wineglass.

“We created more for that foundation than your mother ever could.”

“She used her own name.”

“And died with it.”

Emily tried to stand.

The medication had begun affecting her coordination.

She fell among the decorations.

Ryan removed his belt.

He said later that he intended to use it to secure a broken cabinet.

The footage showed him folding it once around his hand.

Emily curled around her ribs.

“He said I ruined Easter,” she later told police.

The exact statement appeared in the audio.

RYAN: Look what you did. You ruined Easter. You ruin everything you touch.

EMILY: Let me leave.

RYAN: Sign first.

LINDA: Your father has no one. Do you want to become like him?

EMILY: Call him.

LINDA: He should go back to his lonely house.

Emily managed to pull the phone close enough to press my name.

The call connected.

Ryan saw it and stepped toward her.

She whispered:

“Dad, please come get me.”

Then he kicked the phone beneath the sofa.

The line disconnected.

Linda looked toward the foyer camera.

“Delete tonight.”

Ryan answered:

“After she signs.”

Charles checked Emily’s pulse.

“She is conscious enough.”

They dragged her toward the dining table.

She resisted.

Her torn collar caught against a chair.

Ryan raised the belt when she crawled toward the phone again.

That was the moment I entered.

The video did not need interpretation.

The family had arranged their actions around one belief.

Whatever happened inside a Mercer home would later become the version the Mercers agreed to tell.
