Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT KYLE DISAPPEARED

The transmitter routed through servers in three countries.
Tracing it required cooperation, warrants, and time.
Kyle could access recordings from anywhere.
Or someone else could.
My Denver apartment became evidence and then a place I could no longer imagine sleeping.
I moved into a short-term rental under a protected address.
Wade did not know the location.
Neither did most employees.
Nora insisted I stop treating secrecy as shame.
“Security is not surrender when there is a documented threat,” she said.
Kyle’s public account went silent.
His attorneys claimed they had lost direct contact.
The court ordered him to appear or face sanctions in the civil case.
He did not.
A warrant was later issued related to alleged financial fraud, identity misuse, and unlawful surveillance after prosecutors concluded the available evidence met charging standards.
The warrant did not declare him guilty.
It changed his status from hidden litigant to wanted defendant.
Brad was charged with financial offenses, evidence tampering, and conduct related to the Marnie cover-up. The precise allegations did not call her death murder. Prosecutors believed the roadblock and evidence removal could support reckless-endangerment and obstruction theories, subject to proof.
Chase faced forgery, conspiracy, and evidence-related charges.
Both entered not-guilty pleas while continuing cooperation discussions.
Elliot and Russell faced financial and conspiracy investigations. Initial charges focused on fraud and unauthorized access.
Northstar created a restitution reserve for victims connected to the pilot program without admitting full liability.
Wade filed a renewed wrongful-death action with Marnie’s mother.
Civil proof differed from criminal proof.
The raw footage finally allowed the case to proceed past arguments that the channel had never been there.
The footage showed Marnie arriving willingly.
Brad explained the route.
Chase checked her seat belt.
Kyle was not present at the beginning.
Brad changed the scene after receiving a message from Elliot.
MAKE IT FEEL REAL OR THE PILOT IS DEAD.
Brad placed masked actors across the road.
No professional driver followed.
No road closure existed.
When Marnie accelerated away, Brad laughed.
Then her taillights vanished beyond the curve.
The camera recorded the crash sound.
Every person on-screen stopped.
Kyle arrived six minutes later after Brad called.
The vehicle’s emergency system had already contacted dispatch.
Kyle ordered the cards collected.
The crew left.
The footage did not show them watching her suffer.
It showed them choosing their careers over staying to identify what they had done.
Wade watched once.
He did not punch a wall.
He did not shout.
He placed both hands flat on the table.
“She trusted them,” he said.
“Yes.”
“She trusted Chase.”
“Yes.”
“Did she know she was being filmed when she crashed?”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
For two years, he imagined men hiding in darkness.
The truth placed them closer and made them more ordinary.
Cowardice instead of calculated murder.
Greed instead of hatred.
Sometimes the smaller motive hurts more because it means a life was traded for so little.
Mile Marker Media entered Chapter 11 restructuring.
The channel account was frozen during ownership disputes.
Old videos remained visible but were demonetized pending review.
The independent manager established a claims process.
I contributed my future recovery rights to a victim fund after preserving enough for legal defense and taxes.
Nora warned me not to perform repentance publicly.
I made no dramatic announcement.
The fund existed in documents, not content.
Employees received final wages and partial severance.
Twelve were hired by other production companies.
Nine formed a cooperative focused on documentary travel work.
Others left media entirely.
Joel sent me one message.
I don’t forgive you yet. Thank you for telling the truth before the money ran out.
It was more than I deserved.
Brad’s cooperation produced Kyle’s last confirmed route.
After the Northstar flight landed in Denver, Russell arranged a car under a false reservation name. Kyle traveled north toward Wyoming.
A highway camera captured him entering a motel near Cheyenne.
The next morning, he left with a man wearing a baseball cap.
The man resembled Elliot’s supposedly dead brother, Evan Crane.
Investigators reopened questions about Evan’s death.
The certificate reported a boating accident.
No body was recovered.
Another man declared dead without remains.
The Cranes may have used death records to conceal ownership and movement.
Elliot denied knowing Evan survived.
Then Brad provided an email from Elliot.
EVAN WILL MOVE KYLE AFTER DENVER. DO NOT USE COMPANY PHONES.
Kyle’s disappearance had been assisted.
His insurance policy on me, forged documents, and surveillance gave him leverage.
Evan gave him mobility.
Russell gave him transport.
Someone else gave him my protected address.
At 2:13 a.m., the security company called.
A camera outside my rental had recorded a man placing an envelope beneath the doormat.
He wore a hood.
His face never appeared.
Inside the envelope was one of my missing sandals from the pickup.
The broken strap had been repaired.
A note was tucked beneath it.
YOU SAID YOU’D NEVER GET INTO THE TRUCK AGAIN.
THAT DOESN’T MEAN THE TRUCK CAN’T COME TO YOU.
Police searched the area.
No silver pickup.
No suspect.
The sandal carried Kyle’s fingerprint.
It also carried fresh desert dust containing mineral traces common near the Nevada border.
Kyle was no longer in Wyoming.
He was moving toward the place where Chase had hidden his cloud archive.
Las Vegas.
That same night, Chase vanished from his lawyer-approved hotel.
This time, he left a note.

I AM NOT RUNNING FROM KYLE.
I AM GOING TO FINISH WHAT I STARTED.
