CHAP 3 — Get Out of Her Bed

For one second, I stood in the doorway completely frozen.
The yellow nightlight glowed softly against the wall. Lily slept near the edge of the mattress. Nathan lay beside her beneath the maroon blanket.
My husband.
My daughter.
My house.
My trust.
All of it shattered in silence.
Then something inside me turned to steel.
I marched to the bed and ripped the blanket away.
“Nathan! Get the hell out of her bed right now!”
He snapped awake instantly.
Not like an innocent man startled from sleep.
Like a guilty man caught.
His eyes widened, then hardened.
“Keep your voice down,” he barked. “She was scared. I was just comforting her.”
Lily stirred, confused and frightened.
I stepped between them.
“Get up.”
Nathan sat up, face twisting with panic and anger.
“You’re making this ugly.”
“No,” I said. “You did.”
He stood too close.
“She’s my stepdaughter. I helped raise her.”
I shoved my phone in his face.
The camera logs glowed bright white on the screen.
“Liar! The camera caught you creeping in here every single night!”
For the first time, his face changed.
Real fear.
Not guilt.
Fear of being exposed.
“This is illegal,” he snapped. “You recorded me without consent.”
“In my child’s bedroom?” I said. “Try saying that in court.”
Lily sat up, crying now.
“Mommy?”
I turned to her instantly.
“I’m here, baby. You did nothing wrong.”
Nathan reached toward her.
I slapped his hand away.
“Do not touch her.”
His jaw tightened.
“You can’t throw me out.”
“My sister is five minutes away,” I said. “My attorney has the logs. The recordings are backed up. And if you take one step toward Lily, I call 911.”
Outside, headlights swept across the window.
My sister had arrived.
Nathan finally understood.
