CHAP 4 — The Man Who Helped Us Search

Nolan Pierce answered his door at 9:12 p.m.

He was wearing the same kind of work boots Mark used to wear.

That detail made me sick.

Detective Henson told me later he tried to smile when he saw police.

Then he saw the warrant.

Then he stopped smiling.

For six years, Nolan had lived ten minutes away from the body of the man he claimed to mourn.

He had attended Mark’s memorial.

He had hugged me beside Ruby’s stroller.

He had stood in my kitchen and said, “I wish I’d been there that morning.”

He had been.

The evidence in Mark’s tube rebuilt the past with brutal patience.

Nolan had been stealing from the landscaping company for years. Not just petty theft. He had created fake vendors, moved city contract money through shell accounts, forged Mark’s signature on insurance forms, and used the company to clean money for men with names I had seen on campaign signs.

Mark discovered it when I was pregnant.

At first, he tried to confront Nolan privately.

Then he realized Nolan was not acting alone.

That was when Mark poured the slab and hid copies beneath it, planning to take everything to police after Ruby was born.

But Nolan found out.

On the ninth morning after Ruby came home, Nolan entered through the back gate before sunrise. Mark stepped outside so they would not wake me.

The neighbor’s old security camera, recovered only after Detective Henson reopened every angle, showed two shapes moving near the hydrangeas at 6:14 a.m.

At 6:41, Nolan left alone.

At 8:03, he returned with concrete mix.

For six years, everyone missed it because Nolan had positioned himself as the grieving best friend. He gave statements. Organized searches. Suggested places Mark might have gone. Helped detectives until they stopped looking at him.

That was his genius.

Not hiding.

Helping.

When police searched his garage, they found Mark’s missing wedding ring in an old tobacco tin behind paint cans.

I had wondered for years whether Mark had taken it off before leaving.

He had not.

Nolan had kept it.

Like a trophy.

When Detective Henson showed me the evidence bag, something inside me went completely still.

Ruby stood beside me, holding my sleeve.

“Is that Daddy’s?”

I knelt in front of her.

“Yes.”

“Did we find him?”

I looked toward the garden, now torn open beneath harsh work lights.

“Yes, baby.”

May you like

She nodded once, serious and calm.

“Good. He was waiting too long.”
