Chapter 6 - THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT BOUGHT A RESORT
The private fund was called North Harbor Educational Development.
Its stated purpose was to build affordable boarding facilities for rural scholarship students.
The fund owned no schools.
It owned land near a lake in Wisconsin.
Architectural plans showed luxury cabins, a marina, a private golf course, and one small building labeled STUDENT LEADERSHIP CENTER.
Victor controlled the holding company through layered trusts.
Grant approved the partnership.
If the $38 million transfer closed, scholarship money would finance a family resort while one small facility created the appearance of educational purpose.
I had blocked the proposal twice.
The first time, I asked for an independent valuation.
The second, I asked why Victor’s entities stood on both sides of the transaction.
Grant told the board I was emotionally opposed to innovation.
The emergency resolution removed my access and appointed Victor’s preferred trustee in my place.
The transfer was scheduled for Monday morning.
Noah’s party occurred Saturday.
The edited video went public Saturday evening.
Grant filed the custody petition Saturday night.
By Monday, he intended to present the board with a court case, viral outrage, and my supposed abuse of company authority against Madison.
The audio disrupted the plan.
The bank froze the transfer.
Regulators received notice.
The foundation’s independent trustees opened a forensic audit.
Grant accused me of harming scholarship students by delaying construction.
The students named in the proposal had never been consulted.
Several did not exist.
Applications had been copied from prior years and assigned new identification numbers.
The scandal spread beyond our family.
Parents questioned whether tuition funded Victor’s property.
Employees feared layoffs.
Teachers wondered whether reports involving other influential families had also been erased.
I could not answer yet.
I supported an outside administrator rather than taking Grant’s executive chair.
The board restored my access only for foundation oversight under dual authorization.
My company access card worked again.
I entered headquarters with Rachel and the forensic accountant.
My office had been searched.
Drawers were open. The backup drive was missing. Personal files had been boxed and labeled WELLNESS LEAVE.
Grant’s assistant claimed she acted under the board resolution.
The forensic team preserved everything.
In the executive conference room, we found a rehearsal schedule for the birthday.
It did not say assault Claire.
It listed:
4:00 — cake presentation.
4:05 — youth conflict.
4:07 — family intervention.
4:10 — witness statements.
4:20 — crisis team release.
The words made cruelty look administrative.
Madison’s name appeared beside youth conflict.
Noah’s beside emotional confirmation.
Victor’s beside video capture.
Grant’s beside family intervention.
My name appeared only once.
Subject.
The public-relations consultant admitted he had been told the family planned to confront me over inappropriate discipline. He claimed he did not know a cake would be destroyed or that a minor would be provoked.
He had prepared the press statement before arriving.
When asked why, he said Grant warned that I might become violent.
The statement’s first paragraph described me striking Madison.
It had been written before the party.
The board suspended the consultant’s contract and referred the matter for investigation.
At the family-court review, Dana presented the microphone audio.
Victor’s attorney argued Madison could remain with him because he offered stability.
The judge asked whether stability included coaching her to provoke her mother.
Victor denied coaching.
Then the microphone recording played his voice:
Wait until Claire is holding Noah. The picture needs both of them.
Madison turned toward him in court.
Her face went pale.
She had heard the recording before.
What she had not heard was what followed after she left Noah’s room.
Victor told Grant:
Once Claire is gone, Madison’s trust covers the rest.
