Chapter 24 - OLIVER WATCHES THE FOOTAGE

Oliver was twenty-one when he asked to see the hidden-camera recording.

Maya had always said the choice would be his as an adult.

We arranged a private viewing with a therapist and Rachel.

The full footage lasted forty-three minutes.

Oliver watched Evelyn enter the room.

Check his temperature.

Remove the inhaler.

Set the papers on the dresser.

Wake Maya.

He watched his three-year-old body begin to struggle.

Maya’s voice remained calm until fear made calm impossible.

He paused the recording before the drawer struck her.

“Did I know what was happening?”

“No,” Maya said.

“Was I scared?”

“Probably. You wanted me.”

He continued.

The wheezing grew louder.

I entered.

My face on the video looked unlike the man I remembered being.

I slapped Evelyn.

Oliver paused again.

“You looked like you wanted to kill her.”

“I wanted to hurt her.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Did it help me?”

“No.”

He resumed.

Paramedic Cole arrived.

Oxygen.

Nebulizer.

Police.

The drawer.

Camera discovery.

His small body left the room in trained hands.

When the recording ended, Oliver stared at the blank screen.

“I thought the room was bigger.”

“You were little,” Maya said.

“I remember the green dinosaur on the wall.”

“It was there.”

“I don’t remember Grandma.”

Memory had preserved color and removed the person who caused the crisis.

That was not denial.

It was how childhood survived.

Oliver requested one authenticated copy remain in the legal archive.

We destroyed our duplicate.

The government evidence copy remained under retention rules.

He refused public release.

Several documentary producers had asked.

“No one needs to hear me breathe like that to understand the case,” he said.

The sentence ended every discussion.

Afterward, we ate dinner.

Oliver used his inhaler before walking through cold night air.

The sound of the canister made Maya’s shoulders tighten.

Then relax.

Medicine stayed medicine.

The footage returned to storage.

Life remained in the room.
