Chapter 14 - THE FINAL RECORD

Dr. Holt died in federal custody after a stroke at seventy-four.
He had served most of his sentence.
His estate paid a final portion of restitution.
Kendra completed her sentence and worked in a warehouse after release. Her nursing license remained permanently revoked.
She requested no contact with us.
St. Catherine’s maintained the safety reforms created after the switch. Independent audits showed improved compliance and no repeat event.
Northbrook’s remaining corporate entity dissolved after civil claims closed.
Its insurers paid final distributions.
Every stored embryo connected to affected patients had been transferred, donated, or disposed of according to documented instructions.
No unidentified genetic material remained.
The state archived the reproductive-error investigation.
Sarah and I received notice before records were sealed for long-term retention.
Daniel lived quietly after supervision.
He never remarried.
Public records showed no further offenses.
When he developed cancer at sixty-two, his attorney informed Max because Daniel had named him only for notification, not medical authority.
Max was twenty-seven.
“Do you want to visit?” I asked.
“No.”
“Do you want information?”
“Only when he dies.”
Daniel entered hospice.
He did not request contact with the girls.
His final written directive said:
My biological relationships do not create obligations for the people I harmed.
He died three months later.
Max attended no funeral.
Daniel’s sister arranged cremation.
His remaining possessions were sold, and the proceeds paid the last enforceable restitution balance.
He left Max a watch.
Max declined it.
He left the girls no property, honoring the boundary at last.
The estate closed without dispute.
By then, Sophie and Lucy were twenty-two.
They received Daniel’s final statement through counsel.
Neither replied.
Sophie said:
“He finally stopped reaching.”
Lucy answered:
“That matters more than another apology.”
I had once imagined closure would arrive through confession.
Instead, it arrived through the absence of another demand.
All criminal defendants had faced judgment.
All appeals had ended.
All parentage orders were final.
The children’s medical identities were accurate.
The civil settlements had been distributed.
The adults responsible no longer controlled institutions or families.
No hidden baby existed.
No third bracelet waited.

No secret clinic file could reverse who had raised whom.
The record was complete.
