Chapter 13 - EVERETT’S SENTENCE

Everett’s criminal case resolved before Marcelline’s.

He pleaded guilty.

No family bargain erased it.

The judge reviewed:

Amount taken.

No prior criminal record.

Addiction.

Voluntary treatment.

Restitution already paid.

Cooperation.

No physical injuries from impaired driving.

Attempt to conceal some transactions.

Then sentenced him to:

A short period of home confinement after treatment housing.

Multi-year probation.

Full restitution.

Substance-use monitoring.

Financial ethics restrictions.

Community service.

No company fiduciary or financial-authority role during probation.

Some people thought too lenient.

Others too harsh.

I thought it was real.

Everett had not been an innocent man hidden by his sister.

He had been a sick man who committed crimes.

Then recovered enough to face them.

At sentencing he said:

“I used shame as an excuse to disappear from people I owed truth to.”

That was the sentence I cared about.

Not because it repaired us.

Because it named the part no drug forced.

Afterward Piers asked why Daddy had “court trouble.”

I said:

“Daddy took money that wasn’t his and drove when he wasn’t safe.”

“Why?”

“Because he was sick and made bad choices.”

“Is sick excuse?”

“No.”

“Does sick matter?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Both.

Everett began supervised visits twice weekly.

Then four hours.

No overnights.

No solo medical decisions.

No money decisions for Piers.

Not because he was dangerous forever.

Because trust required evidence.

Then Marcelline filed a motion in family court.

She claimed my assault conviction showed I was unstable and requested grandparent visitation with Piers because she had served as a primary caregiver during Everett’s absence.

The audacity almost made me laugh.

Her lawyer had a point on one narrow fact:

She had provided childcare.

Regularly.

Family court still had to consider her conduct.

My plate conviction mattered.

So did her food punishment.

Her threat.

Her interference with Everett contact.

The judge denied immediate visitation and ordered evaluation.

No automatic grandparent rights.

No revenge.

Process.

Marcelline had turned my worst moment into her last opening.

I would have to defend my parenting without pretending I had been perfect.

May you like

Fine.

I had learned how.
