Chapter 10 - WHO I WAS BEFORE JULIAN

I did not go alone.
Daniel arranged a monitored meeting inside an empty federal office suite. Agents occupied adjoining rooms. Paige believed I had complied because she saw only me at the table.
She entered with a bandage along her hairline and no case.
“Arthur took it.”
“Then why contact me?”
“Because I copied the drive.”
She placed a memory card between us.
Paige had helped forge my clinic authorization, the paternity report, and the federal login. She had impersonated me on two video calls.
She also kept copies because Arthur threatened to blame her if the plan failed.
“What did Julian know?”
“Everything about the transfer. Not everything about his father’s older fraud.”
The card contained evidence requiring full forensic verification.
It also contained my mother’s original partnership agreement.
Helen Monroe had co-founded Vance Biologics and developed the diagnostic method underlying its most profitable products.
Arthur concealed her ownership after she became ill.
He licensed her patents through shell companies, diverted royalties, and used forged transfers to erase her stake.
The trust for Helen’s surviving child remained valid unless the Vances proved the hospital-bed surrender document genuine.
I was that surviving child.
I had entered the marriage believing Julian loved me despite our different backgrounds.
He had known exactly who my mother was.
Arthur instructed him to date me after a dormant trust inquiry surfaced seven years earlier.
The marriage gave the family access to my records, signatures, devices, and eventual child.
Julian’s affair with Chloe was real, but the “heir” plan was corporate theater. Beatrice intended to present Chloe’s baby as Julian’s while using forged evidence to exclude mine.
My watch was not an ordinary gift from Julian.
I had replaced his gift weeks earlier with an FBI-approved emergency recorder after becoming a confidential cooperating witness.
That was who Julian had failed to check.
Not a secret agent.
Not a billionaire waiting to reveal herself.
A forensic accountant.
The daughter of the scientist his family erased.
The lawful beneficiary of the patent trust they had spent three decades stealing.
And the witness who had spent six months helping federal agents trace every dollar.
Paige’s memory card opened with one audio file.
Julian’s voice said:
“If Clara signs at the shower, we keep her alive inside the family. If she refuses, the fall can bring the baby early.”
Arthur answered:
“Do not speak carelessly.”
Julian laughed.
“No one is recording us.”
The central truth was finally audible.

Julian had not lost control when he kicked me.
He had followed a plan.
