Chapter 1 - TWO O’CLOCK

Julian’s fist drove into my abdomen before I had time to turn away.

The marble floor vanished beneath me.

My back struck the decorated gift table, and the entire display collapsed in a storm of silver ribbons, glass trays, wrapped presents, and cupcakes. Pain tore across my belly as I fell, but my hands reached our baby before the rest of me understood what had happened.

I curled around her.

For one terrifying second, she did not move.

The ballroom remained silent except for a champagne flute rolling beneath a chair.

Julian stood above me in his tailored suit. His cufflinks remained perfectly aligned. Twenty-two-year-old Chloe Mercer held his arm as though they were posing for another photograph.

“She’s carrying the real heir,” he said, pulling Chloe closer, “not that thing in your womb.”

My mouth tasted like copper.

“Julian…”

Arthur Vance stepped away from the head table. My father-in-law’s expression held no surprise, only irritation that the scene had disrupted his celebration.

“Without this family, you’re nothing.”

Beatrice lifted both hands and gave one deliberate clap.

Then another.

A few guests turned away. Others stared at their phones without raising them, desperate to avoid becoming witnesses.

The baby moved beneath my palms.

One hard roll.

Alive.

I forced myself to breathe.

My shattered wristwatch hung loosely against my skin. The crystal had broken when I struck the table, but the digital mechanism beneath it still worked.

1:59.

Fourteen months of copied ledgers, preserved emails, shell-company invoices, and recorded conversations had led to this minute.

The Vances believed I had spent those months decorating nurseries and attending charity lunches.

They did not know I had been meeting Special Agent Rebecca Lawson in parking garages, attorney conference rooms, and the back pew of a church neither of us attended.

They did not know federal warrants had been sealed that morning.

They certainly did not know the task force had selected the baby shower because Arthur, Beatrice, Julian, and Chloe would all be in one place while simultaneous teams entered Vance Aeronautics headquarters, three warehouses, and two accounting offices.

My watch vibrated once.

The prearranged signal.

Agents were on the estate.

I pressed one hand against the floor and slowly lifted myself.

Julian’s confidence flickered.

“You really should have checked who you married.”

The minute changed.

The grand ballroom doors burst open.

“Federal agents! Remain where you are!”

Guests screamed and pushed away from the tables. Men and women in dark jackets entered with identification displayed. Two uniformed county deputies followed.

Arthur stepped in front of Julian.

“This is private property.”

Agent Lawson moved directly toward us.

“Arthur Vance, we have a federal search warrant for this residence and arrest warrants connected to procurement fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy.”

Beatrice’s hands fell to her sides.

Chloe released Julian’s arm.

Julian looked from the agents to me.

“You did this.”

A contraction seized my abdomen.

I folded forward.

Lawson saw the blood on my lip and the wreckage around me.

“What happened?”

“My husband hit me.”

Julian pointed at the destroyed table.

“She fell during an argument.”

A guest near the wall finally raised her phone.

“I recorded it.”

Another voice followed.

“So did I.”

The silence that protected Julian broke all at once.

Paramedics entered behind the second group of agents. A woman named Carla knelt beside me and placed both hands near my shoulders without touching.

“Clara, can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Where is the pain?”

“My abdomen. Eight months pregnant.”

“Any bleeding?”

“I don’t know.”

She called for a stretcher and fetal monitor.

A county deputy approached Julian.

“Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Arthur stepped between them.

“My son is named in your federal warrant. You cannot invent a domestic charge to humiliate him.”

The deputy looked at the guests holding phones.

“I don’t need to invent anything.”

Julian’s wrists were cuffed.

Chloe began backing toward a side door.

Agent Lawson stopped her.

“Chloe Mercer, remain in the room.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“We will provide medical care if needed. You are not free to leave.”

Beatrice sat heavily in a chair.

Arthur remained upright, but his face had lost its color.

Carla attached a monitor across my belly.

Static filled the ballroom.

Then our daughter’s heartbeat came through—fast, uneven, but present.

“We transport now,” Carla said.

As paramedics lifted me, Agent Lawson leaned close enough that only I could hear.

“The primary server was wiped eight minutes before entry.”

My pain briefly disappeared beneath another fear.

“That’s impossible.”

“Someone knew the raid time.”

“Who?”

Lawson glanced toward Julian, Arthur, Beatrice, and Chloe.

“We don’t know yet.”

Then she placed a sealed evidence bag on the stretcher beside me.

Inside was a Vance Aeronautics account authorization bearing my signature.

The beneficiary account had received eleven million dollars in stolen federal funds.

“You need to understand something before the hospital,” she said. “The warrant does not name you only as our source.”

I stared at the signature.

May you like

It looked exactly like mine.

“You are also listed as a potential conspirator.”
