Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF DAUGHTERS

The phrase came from David.

He had created an internal family ledger that treated my daughters as financial liabilities.

Prenatal care.

Birth costs.

Childcare.

Clothing.

Education.

Every expense was listed beneath Michael’s name as though he had personally funded it.

Beside each total, David recorded “offsets” taken from the girls’ trusts.

Michael had approved the reimbursements.

My daughters had paid their father for the inconvenience of their existence.

The $1.2 million flowed into his private investment account and then into Holloway Family Services.

Claire controlled that account for Michael.

She requested a cooperation meeting.

Her attorney sat beside her while she admitted recording the dinner, transferring money, and preparing school payments.

“I thought Michael would get temporary custody,” she said.

“You knew the girls were going away.”

“Jessica said it would last six weeks.”

“Did Olivia know?”

“No.”

“Did Megan?”

“No.”

“You paid a boarding school to take preschoolers without telling their mother.”

Claire began crying.

“I owed money.”

“How much?”

“Four hundred thousand.”

“Michael paid it?”

“He promised to.”

“In exchange for your account?”

“Yes.”

She claimed she did not know about the forged dead-woman signature or the full vendor scheme.

Bank records would determine whether that was credible.

Her cooperation mattered.

It did not erase her role.

Detective Ruiz obtained warrants for David and Jessica’s devices.

Jessica’s messages revealed the dinner strategy.

Serve the girls scraps.

Make Emily defend them.

Michael blocks the door.

Claire films.

If Emily touches anyone, police.

If she only breaks property, still enough for emergency review.

David responded:

Use the broth on the little one. Emily reacts faster when Megan cries.

The broth had not splashed accidentally when Jessica slammed the bowl.

Megan was chosen because her crying would trigger me.

Jessica did not intend a serious burn.

She intended fear.

The law did not need exaggeration to recognize cruelty.

David’s messages also discussed the family continuity release.

Once signed, Michael would control Vale Meridian votes, property trusts, and the girls’ accounts.

Jessica asked what happened if I read it.

David wrote:

She won’t. Michael tells her the toast is starting and points to the signature tab.

The system relied on habit.

For years, Michael handed me documents during crowded events, school mornings, and airport drives.

I signed routine pages because I trusted him.

The dinner would have been another hurried signature if Grace had not warned me that week about suspicious transfers.

That warning was why I entered already angry.

Michael knew.

He accelerated the guardianship plan.

The criminal investigation expanded to fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, attempted custodial interference, and child endangerment.

Jessica was arrested after violating the no-contact order by sending Olivia a voice message through a cousin.

“You made your father lose everything,” she said. “Tell the judge the truth and the family will forgive you.”

The cousin preserved it.

David was arrested the following morning.

Michael remained free under strict conditions while prosecutors reviewed his cooperation offer.

Then the mansion’s kitchen manager turned over a storage drive.

She had secretly copied the service-camera footage because Jessica ordered all recordings deleted after we left.

The final clip showed Michael entering the kitchen ten minutes before dinner.

Jessica asked:

“Are you certain she’ll overturn something?”

May you like

Michael looked toward the dining room.

“If she doesn’t, spill the broth directly on Megan.”
