Chapter 6 - THE STORAGE UNIT

Jake had not been near the storage facility.
His phone location, command records, and Rachel’s building camera placed him with me when the unit was opened.
But Evelyn knew his usual four-digit code.
She had used his identity before.
Police obtained footage from the facility. A person wearing a hooded raincoat entered through the side door and wheeled out two boxes.
The face remained hidden.
The figure’s height and movement were consistent with Evelyn, but that was not proof.
The boxes were loaded into a dark sedan without visible plates.
The storage manager provided rental records.
The unit had been opened in Jake’s name.
His electronic signature appeared on the contract.
Payments came from the missing household money.
Jake looked physically ill when Detective Ortiz explained it.
“She built everything under me.”
“Your identity gave her cover,” Ortiz said. “That does not mean you approved every act. It does mean we must verify each one.”
Police secured the remaining contents of the unit under a warrant.
Inside were copies of my medical records, photographs of me sleeping, printed messages with sections highlighted, and unopened baby supplies.
There were also folders labeled:
MEGAN INCIDENTS
TEMPORARY CARE
COMMAND CONTACTS
The most disturbing item was a calendar tracking Jake’s duty schedule alongside notes about my behavior.
Tuesday—Jake overnight. Increase pressure.
Thursday—appointment. Cancel if she refuses plan.
Saturday—Rachel may call. Keep phone.
The handwriting appeared to be Evelyn’s.
A document examiner still had to verify it.
The two removed boxes remained missing.
My preterm labor stabilized after two nights. The baby’s lungs and heartbeat appeared reassuring, but the obstetrician restricted travel, lifting, and prolonged standing.
I was twenty-nine weeks pregnant.
Every legal meeting now had to be balanced against the possibility of delivering too early.
Jake asked whether I wanted him to stay at Rachel’s apartment.
I did.
That did not mean I trusted him completely.
He had failed to see what was happening in his own house. He had handed Evelyn access to schedules, money, records, and passwords. He had dismissed my fear as pregnancy stress.
“I should have told you clearly,” I said.
“You tried.”
“I hid the worst of it.”
“Because I trained you to expect that I would defend her.”
The sentence hurt because it was accurate.
Jake slept on the couch and attended every medical appointment he was permitted to attend.
He also met with an investigator from his command.
The military inquiry focused on his slap, the threat recording, account access, and whether he had misused his position or equipment.
No evidence showed he used military resources to harm Evelyn.
The slap remained undisputed.
His commander issued a formal reprimand pending final review and required counseling for anger and family violence awareness.
Jake did not call it unfair.
Evelyn’s protective-order hearing approached.
Her attorney argued that the storage unit proved Jake had collected private information about both women and used his mother as a household servant.
Our attorney presented access records, account theft, forged signatures, and the partial audio.
The judge dissolved the portion of the order based on alleged long-term violence but kept mutual no-contact provisions in place because Jake admitted the slap and had made the unfinished threat.
Jake lost nothing permanent that day.
But he did not receive full vindication either.
Outside court, Evelyn’s attorney handed mine a sealed packet.
Inside was a sworn statement from a home health aide named Carol Ames.
Carol claimed she had visited our house twice during Jake’s absences.
She stated that she saw me strike my own legs with a wooden hairbrush while Evelyn tried to stop me.
She also claimed I said:
Once the baby comes, Jake will never see either of us again.
Carol provided dates.
Both matched periods when my bruises worsened.

For the first time, Evelyn had produced an independent witness.
And I remembered Carol standing in our hallway—but I had never invited her inside.
