Chapter 21 - LILY READS THE TEST
At fourteen, Lily asked to see the DNA report.
Not because she doubted Daniel.
Because everyone around her had spent years treating the paper as sacred.
We reviewed it with Maya and her independent trustee.
She read the probability.
“99.9999.”
“Yes.”
“So basically Dad.”
“Yes.”
She looked irritated.
“Was I not his daughter before this paper?”
“You were.”
“Then why did everybody need it?”
“Because adults created a legal and financial structure where verification mattered.”
“That’s stupid.”
“In many ways.”
She turned to the old report.
Page one.
Page two.
Page three.
The missing page.
“Grandma removed this?”
“She ordered it excluded from annual family packets.”
“Did Dad see it?”
“No.”
“Could he have asked?”
“Yes.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
Lily sat quietly.
Then:
“That hurts more.”
I understood.
Margaret was openly cruel.
Daniel’s harm came through not looking.
Lily met him that weekend.
She asked directly:
“Why didn’t you find page two?”
Daniel did not say:
I trusted Mom.
He said:
“Because I was afraid the truth would force me to choose between you and the family system paying for my life. I told myself waiting was neutral.”
“Was it?”
“No.”
“Did you choose them?”
“Yes.”
Lily cried.
Daniel cried too.
He did not touch her until she moved toward him.
Later, she told me:
“I still love him.”
“That’s allowed.”
“I’m still mad.”
“That too.”
