Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO ANSWERED THE PHONE
Dad’s executive assistant was named Paulina Chase.
She had worked for him for six years.
Every time I called his office, Veronica answered or the call went to voicemail.
Paulina said my number never appeared.
The company phone system showed calls from our house redirected to a private line.
Owen Cross’s office requested the redirect.
The stated reason:
Protect CEO from domestic disruptions during Northstar negotiations.
Paulina assumed Dad approved.
He did not.
My calls went first to Veronica’s phone.
She answered in another room, then returned and told me Dad was too busy.
Dad’s calls home were also redirected.
Veronica answered before the house phone rang.
She told him I was asleep, studying, or angry.
Sometimes she placed me on video with the camera positioned so he could not see the uniform below my shoulders.
Before each call, she rehearsed my words.
School is good.
Veronica is kind.
I understand your work is important.
Everything is fine.
If I made a mistake, she squeezed my wrist beneath the table.
The bruises had come from reminders.
Paulina cried while listening.
“I should have questioned the redirect.”
Dad answered:
“I should never have allowed any system where my daughter could be classified as a disruption.”
The company’s internal review uncovered more.
Owen approved private invoices from Hayes Family Care.
He also arranged Dad’s extended travel schedule.
Several trips could have been handled remotely.
He insisted the chief executive’s presence was necessary.
Each absence gave Veronica more control.
Dad had chosen the travel.
Owen created reasons.
The distinction mattered.
Dad could not blame scheduling alone.
He repeatedly accepted work as more urgent than checking the house himself.
The independent board placed Owen on administrative leave.
He refused to surrender his laptop until counsel arrived.
Vaughn Meridian’s share price fell after rumors of a trust investigation.
Dad remained on leave.
Some directors demanded his resignation for allowing personal misconduct to infect company governance.
He did not fight them publicly.
At home—our temporary apartment—he began learning my routines.
He did not know I hated scrambled eggs.
He did not know I needed the hallway light on.
He did not know Mom’s old music helped me sleep.
Veronica knew all those things.
Knowledge did not make her safe.
Dad’s ignorance did not make him harmless.
One night he found me cleaning his shoes.
I had taken them from beside the door and sat with a cloth on the kitchen floor.
He stopped.
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
My hands continued moving.
“If they’re clean, people don’t get angry.”
Dad sat on the floor several feet away.
“I will not become angry if my shoes are dirty.”
“You got angry when Veronica wore Mom’s bracelet.”
“At her.”
“Angry sounds the same through a door.”
He looked down.
“I need to change how this home sounds.”
He placed the shoes inside a closet.
Not hidden.
Just unavailable for polishing.
The child therapist, Dr. Lila Chen, used play instead of demanding details.
I arranged toy figures around a dollhouse.
One adult stood outside holding a briefcase.
Another locked the child inside.
“Who has the key?” Dr. Chen asked.
“The woman.”
“Does the father know?”
“He says no.”
“Do you believe him?”
I moved the father figure farther away.
“Sometimes.”
Dr. Chen did not correct me.
Police examined the family continuity packet Dad signed.
The first pages concerned insurance.
The final pages granted temporary residential authority to a “designated domestic partner” during travel.
Veronica’s name had been added after the signature.
The alteration was visible in document metadata.
The packet alone did not make her guardian.
It gave the appearance of Dad’s intent.
Combined with my recordings and school file, it could support an emergency petition.
Then the trust auditor called.
Hayes Family Care had received more than $7 million.
