Chapter 8 - THE DECISION
Walter was found two days later in a motel.
He had left voluntarily after Robert’s attorney warned that cooperation could expose his past accounting violations.
He requested counsel and entered a formal proffer.
Evelyn’s final years had been consumed by Greenvale’s proposed sale.
Robert wanted to sell the orchards to a luxury developer.
Evelyn opposed it.
She created a voting trust that would activate when her first three great-grandchildren were all alive.
Rebecca, Jacob, and Samuel.
The children did not receive direct control as minors.
An independent trustee would vote the controlling block while their guardian protected their interests.
If authentic, the structure meant Robert’s temporary control ended when Samuel was born four years earlier.
He had concealed the event and continued voting the shares.
Walter had helped maintain two sets of ledgers.
One showed Robert as custodian.
The private ledger showed the trust had activated.
Walter claimed Evelyn later forgave him and ordered him to preserve copies.
He did not know where they were.
His testimony was useful.
His admitted misconduct made it vulnerable.
Robert attacked him as a frightened criminal seeking leniency.
Then the receiver traced the $640,000 reserve transfer.
The money paid deposits for the luxury development proposal Evelyn had rejected.
Robert intended to sell Greenvale before the trust court confirmed the children’s voting rights.
The garden party served as more than an anniversary.
It brought relatives together to sign family consents and create photographs of the children performing the old beneficiary-service ritual.
Robert hoped to argue that Thomas accepted a lesser ceremonial inheritance instead of voting authority.
The legal theory was weak.
Confusion was the real weapon.
If he closed the development deal first, years of litigation might follow.
The receiver found the draft sale agreement.
Closing date: Monday.
Buyer deposit: already paid.
Robert needed the trust question silenced before then.
Then Helen’s missing cake box appeared in a storage locker rented under Rebecca’s name.
Police opened it.
Inside were three blank ceremonial acknowledgments signed by Robert as custodian.
Beneath them lay the original party schedule.
The final item was an audio recorder.
